New R9S at the Range
« on: January 03, 2011, 12:51:22 AM »
Finally got to the range to make some noise today.  I do not know how those of you without magazine extensions hold on to this thing!

I shot 50 rounds of Winchester 115 gr Silvertips.  That is WAY more than I will shoot next time.  Feeding, firing, and ejection were flawless.

While certainly not more than I could handle, it was uncomfortable after a short while.  I was very accurate for the first 10-15 rounds, but, I got progressively worse.  I'll have to make sure any encounters with it limit out at 15 shots.  I shot about 100 very lightly loaded 44 special afterward and I couldn't hit anything at my normal rate.

I love the R9S - it is compact, smooth, and like a fine piece of machinery.  However, I will contain my range sessions a lot more than I did this time!

Maybe a little softer grip is in order, or, a glove for range sessions?

I guess I'm formally in the "club" now!

Hi, sounds like you had a blast.
Like you I don't have any issues with recoil, I do have an issue with the R-Nine feeling slippery. I think for that reason the G-10 grips work better. I currently have the carbon fiber grips on the pistol. The skateboard tape seemed to reduce the amount of roll the pistol showed tendencies of.
The magazine extension would be a great tool to help all around, but I want to keep the pistol as small as I can for concealment and would limit the use to range only.

I'm currently carrying the R-9 with Silvertips also, they seem to function well.

Thanks for the update and the RR.

rodell.  Excellent range report and thanks.  Love those Silvertips.

It's nice to see a range report like this - congratulations on the new pup.

I've not tried Silvertips but if they are anything like Gold Dots my condolences to your hand after shooting a box of 'em - it sort of teaches the meaning of "shoot a little and carry a lot".

My hand was red, that's for sure.  Only once I wrapped my off hand a little too close and bruised my off-hand thumb.

I guess with 50 I'll call it "reliable".  It sure won't be my normal 500 (I did order a handful of springs today!).

I'm foaming at the mouth to get mine.  Thanks for the advice & I'll have to be careful not to over-do it when I get my R9s.

The magazine extension was one of my first accessories.  I have XXL hands and would not be able to hold on to it without the extension.

Thanks for the range report.

RB, I'm glad the extensions help you get a better grip on the pup.
