Magazine Spring Question
« on: October 23, 2010, 04:14:20 PM »
How many coils are on a magazine spring? As I recall Rohrbaugh added a coil or two over time. I've got one mag thats a little weak, it has 11 coils on taller side. My others have 13 coils and feel better. Well, somewhere over the last year and a half I aquired two replacement springs, so I decided to change it out. The replacements have 16 coils and I was shooting springs across the room trying to get it into the magazine. After mashing the spring in there it was, as no surprise, a lot stiffer than the rest. I guess it would hold six bullets but I never tried it and removed the spring. My guess is they were passed to me as a Rohrbaugh springs but meant for a different gun.

How many coils ya got?

I pulled out 4 springs and the count was somewhat surprising: 11, 13, 13, and 14. 16 sounds too high and 13 sounds about right but the 14 may be an anomaly.

I just checked the magazine I have in my R9 and the spare I'm carrying. Each one has 11 coils, but both are circa 2004.

The 16 coil springs are identical in everyway to the 13 coiled ones, except length, so I did what anyone with a wire cutters would do. Instant 13 coiled spring. Feels the same  as the other 3 mags now. Guessing Rohrbaugh changed from 11 to 13 same time they improved their recoil springs.

Richard, I'm confused, was that a misprint?    Gene

Yep!  Should be 2004.  I just checked the #127 and it has 11 coils.

Yes, it was a misprint, now above corrected. (However, 1964 was a rather memorable year.  8) )
