Ammo
« on: March 22, 2009, 12:31:34 PM »
In reading the posts I can find about different ammo Im still confused...I cant find any silvertip anywhere except on the internet ...I want to buy ammo locally...cost is not a factor...I am looking for the ammo which works the best in the r9... love my new r9 although I havent fired it yet because I dont know what to put in it...I also know that if someone fires a small gun with a LIMP WRIST the gun will not chamber or eject properly causing a jam so when I read the posts I have no idea whether the malfunction was caused by the shooter or the ammo...I intend to carry this gun for protection and cant afford to even worry or hesitate for a second that this gun will jam or fail as it may cost me or those I am protecting our life...Is there a load which minimizes this concern...are there any mods which can be done to reduce this concern>

IMO, the two most "reliable" brands are Gold Dot's and Winchester Silvertips.
If I was going to carry the gun fo self defense, It would be filled with Silvertips.

Reliability and performance seem to define the GD and
Silvertip. That is a great combination and they are the
ne plus ultra by general consensus for the R9.

Unfortunately, I can't find any Silvertips at the moment, even online.  I hope the market evens out soon..... just glad I have a couple boxes of Gold Dots left over from my last 9mm, along with 3-4 boxes of Winchester white.

Just make sure it's not +P gold dots.  I ended up having to create a stack of reg. 9mm for my Rohrbaugh so I did not mix up the ammo.  I do shoot the +P stuff in my XDM.

Just fyi I bought a couple of cases of Blazer 115 grain fmj just for shooting stuff for $7.10 per bx of 50. Just for the hell of it I tryed them in my Rohrbough and they ran trouble free. These are the one's with alum.case's so reloading is out but for the price who cares? I got them from Natchez shooter supply. They are now listed for $8.99 per box. I don't know if they have any left.

Even with all the ammo hoarding lately you should be able to find Speer Gold Dots.

I, personally, recommend the 124 gr standard pressure.  In the 50 round boxes it's product No 53618.  Usually when Speer sells in the smaller "civilian" boxes it just changes the first number so it would be 23618, but they have been known not to always follow their own conventions.

Frankly, IMO it's no great loss if you can't find the Silvertips.  I can see why some gunmakers recommend them because they're slick and feed well in just about anything.  However, they don't have a very good rep on the receiving end (i.e. terminal ballistics).

I agree that Gold Dots are the way to go however the 124 Bullet has been known to keyhole in many tests and evaluations.   If you use Gold Dots in your Rohrbaugh, I would recommend the 115 gr standard pressure Speer product # 23614.  No Keyholing noted in tests.

jerseyboy makes a good point and I responded based upon my experience.

I had keyholing with some of the other 124 grain loads that I tried (the worst was the new bonded Federal), but not with the gold dots I referenced.

The only real way to tell is to shoot some in your pistol and look really closely at the targets for any sign of elliptical-shaped entry holes.

I recommended the 124 gr because that is what the FBI tests have found to be the lightest weight 9MM bullet for adequate (i.e. min of 12") penetration -- except for the Corbons which may (or not) function with your pistol.

I read alot about these 2 and about WWB for practice.
Does the Lawman series offer the same reliability as the GD?
Other than a FMJ , they sound identical, except for the price of course.

I think they are very reliable and I think that the Rohrbaughs might
have put their stamp of approval on them at some point but some-
one please correct me if I am wrong on that.
