Corbon Ammo on Rohrbaugh Website?
« on: December 12, 2008, 11:09:41 AM »
Greetings!

Tell me something about the Corbon Ammo on the Rohrbaugh website?

It is listed as 80g DPX HP at 1300 fps, not +p.

I can't find this round on the Corbon site (unless I missed it).

My gut tells me this round doesn't exist.  Am I right or wrong?

In a recent post on here, someone ordered it from the website and tried it out.

It's been talked about for a long time now as a special round specifically for the R9.  Apparently, it was so special, Corbon decided to let Rohrbaugh market and sell it for them.  Makes sense when you think about it.  The R9 is a premium, low-volume manufacturer and there is no way to get a Midway or AmmoToGo to carry a product when there are less than 4,000 owners as a target audience.

So what is the final opinion?  Good, bad, indifferent?  Worth the extra price, or should I stick with Golddots?

I think this would be my answer.
1) Do gold dots feed well for you, any malfunctions?  If not...stick with them!!!!!!!  Gold Dots have either the #2 or #1 expansion of any bullet I've seen tested.

2) If not, try Federal HST.  They expand probably #1 or #2.  Softer primers than Gold Dots from what I've read.

3) Winchester Silvertips...the factory recommended.

4)  If you've just gotta try Corbon...do so; but I'm not a fan of their product except to say they're usually hot even in non+P form.  However, I've experienced crimping issues in 2 different calibers.

Anybody fire the Federal Low recoil 105 grain expanding full metal jacket in their Pup ?   Sounds like a real winner if it is reliabile and goes bang when you pull the trigger.

If I understood Karl Rohrbaugh correctly when we spoke by phone a few weeks ago, he worked with Corbon directly to develop a controllable 9mm round that would penetrate sufficiently and expand reliably when fired through a barrel as short as it is on the R9.

There was a fair amount of trial and error in the development of the round, and this, when combined with low demand (there is only one 9mm handgun out there with the characteristics of the R9), means a high per round price and limited availability (from Rohrbaugh).

I've ordered a few for carry rounds directly from Rohrbaugh, due in later this month.

For range use, Rohrbaugh recommends Federal's American Eagle 115g FMJ.

Today I had a nice range session with my R9S--shot 115g Silvertips, Gold Dots, Federal 9BP Hi-Shok, and Blazer Brass FMJ with no problems whatsoever.  Afterward I was in the gun shop and noticed one 50-round box of Hornady 9mm XTP JHP with a 90g bullet.  The box claims muzzle velocity of 1360 fps from a 4" barrel.  I had been thinking about trying the new Cor-Bon 80g round, so I went ahead and bought this Hornady box because it was right there, and pretty cheap.  Anybody have any experience with this 90g round?

Tom:  Yeah, I looked carefully and there's no +P indication on the box.  It's Hornady's stock #9020, and I don't think it's on their website anymore.  FWIW, I found a couple of other references to the ammo online (including one Kahr P9 review from 2000), and they didn't say +P either.  It sounds pretty comparable to the new Corbon stuff, which isn't +P, but maybe there are degrees of "hotness" that I should avoid as long as other ammo is working well.
