Buying one

I've been looking at the R9S stealth on the internet for a long time, and finally got to see/handle one at a gun show yesterday.  I loved it.  The only thing that didn't impress me was the grips, they looked dirty and worn even though the gun came out of a sealed box.  This is the new style.  I think they looked better in pictures, but that's a minor thing.

The price was $1195 (I'm in Dallas).  From what I've seen, that's a decent price.  I could order online for a little less, and save sales tax.

If anyone has a suggestion on a Dallas source for this gun at a good price, let me know, thanks.

I'm a newbee to this forum and have been lurking for a while.
Thanks for all the info and discussion.  I've found your info, very helpful.  I'm ready to purchase an R-9s (not certain of which model) .  I've carried a Seecamp for a long time and decided to move up in caliber.  I live in Naples Florida and have a Florida CWL.  I do not have a FFL.
Can anyone please suggest a vendor.  Additionally, I'd appreciate any comments on suggested holsters.  I've used (and liked) a Mitch Rosen Holster for the Seecamp for a long time.  I don't know if he makes them for the R-9.  Anyway, I appreciate any suggestions and information.  Thank for the help.  Cujo

If I were you, and you don't get one off of the for sale board here, I'd still recommend Tom Watson.  I'm sure he can ship to your local FFL and may be able to assist with finding one (though I'll leave that to you and him).  Tom's a great guy and can be trusted to do all that is necessary for a smooth transaction.  

As for holsters, Jim at Hidden Holsters is just up the road from you (and from where I used to live too) in the Tampa Bay area (www.hiddenholsters.net).

I didn't get to the range to shoot mine this weekend, but I played with it a bit at home, and here are my thoughts as a new owner.

- The G10 grips just don't look like they belong on this gun.

- I wish the back of the hammer on a stealth was also black, so there's nothing glinting out of the top of my pocket.

- Pushing out the pin to disassemble the gun was pretty easy.

- Reassembling the recoil spring assembly was a little tricky, and then to get the slide to go back on correctly I had to move the back of the assmbly (the disk) around a few times to get it to slide in correctly.

- It's the same height as my Glock 33, though published data on the two guns shows the R9 should be 0.5 inches shorter.

- It's a little over a pound with 6 shells in it, still enough to sag my pants a bit.

- Due to the very short slide, I got my hand/fingers in the way of an ejecting shell the first few times I tried to eject by pulling the slide back.

- I'm still quite happy with it.

Next step will be a workable holster.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I have used a Mitch Rosen and Milt Sparks pocket holster for the Seecamp for a long time.  I'm open to suggestions and will definitely look into the Tampa firm.

I got to the range today for the first time.  I warmed up a bit with my Glock 357 Sig and got a nice tight grouping at 7yds.  Then I switched to the R9S, and was all over the place for the first couple clips.  Mainly due to the much longer trigger pull, I think.  Once I got used to it, I was about as accurate as with the Glock.  Definitely more recoil kick from the R9s.

I shot Gold Dot 147gr GDHP, Winchester 115gr JHP (not the Silvertips), and Remington 115gr JHP.  Everything fed, fired, and ejected 100%.  

So I'm just as pleased as can be.  I'll clean it up and lube it, then carry it until next summer when I'll practice with it a bit again.
