Lubing the R9
« on: April 26, 2008, 12:33:43 AM »
OK.  I'm back from the range after my first mini-outing with my new Elite.  With much fear and trepidation, I succeeded in extracting the little pin and removing the top slide.  Then, after about 30 minutes of nervous tugging, I got the spring assembly and barrel out (releasing the little cap and larger of the two springs, both of which took off in different directions).

Cleaning the bore is simple; I like a mixture of Hoppes #9 and Kroil.

But what about all the other lubrications?  The instruction book lists about 90% of the innards as needing lubrication but it does not say what to use.

My favorite oil for keeping the sliding parts of my Kimber slick is Abu Garcia Silicote Reel oil.  I also have a tube of Wlson Combat Ultima-Lube grease but that's a lot thicker.

Can some of you experienced users tell me what oil and/or grease you prefer.  I assume that only a thin coating is needed.

Many thanks.

It is pretty much down to any good oil for lubing!!

I stiil use Superlube on a couple of spots, but use regular CLP on the rest!! ;D

Early on it was Superlube and Mobil One 0-30 synthetic that was reccommended..

Over time things change, just please make sure that you do keep it lubed properly and the pup will treat you right!!

Did you find the "fliers"?? ;)

What is CLP?  I take it you would not use the Wilson grease...

Re the fliers, are you referring to my recent range report?

CLP = Breakfree CLP..It is the "choice" of AR15/M16 owners..
It is a very good "everything" lube IMO..

The grease you have would be fine in moderation IMO..

The "fliers" I was referring to were your spring/cap that tried to get away!! ;)

Chinook:

There are a lot of excellent products out there. I personally have come to prefer Ballistol to lubricate my R9:

Your description of the first time taking apart your R9 reminded me of my own experience in that regard. I too had to go looking for parts on the floor.  :D

I have a large piece of carpet on the bench so stuff, parts and springs, don't go flying around.  Tom

Sorry for being slow to get back to this; my network was down for "upgrading"...

I looked up CLP and it looks interesting.  It's hard for me to tell if it's better for cleaning the barrel (what I now use a mixture of Kroil and Hoppe's #9) or for oiling/lubing.  IMHO, these are two different functions and would benefit from two different "tools".

And yes, my "fliers" are all in hand... even the ones on my last target...

I'll be putting my little pup back together as soon as I decide which oil/grease to use.

Thanks again.

I can't believe nobody mentioned EEZOX.  Good stuff.  It replaced CLP in my toolbox.  Hoppes is still good too for bore cleaning.
