New Recoil Spring Problems
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:46:38 PM »
I have had a flawlessly working R9 until I changed the recoil spring. I checked the original spring and found that it was a good 3/8" shorter than the new one that I had. Seemed to be a good time to replace it.  Went to the range today  and had nothing but problems. No problems with ejecting the case or firing when the bullet chambered. However, I could not get through a magazine without problems with chambering the round. Majority of the rounds in the magazine went high with bullet head above the chamber. I was using WWB that had always functioned fine in my R9. It obviously has to do with the new recoil spring because no problems prior to replacing it.It was not a limp wrist issue or anything else that I could determine.
Any suggestions would be helpful. By the way, I did try a search but was not successful.

Let to pistol just "sit" for about 48 hours then try again. This has worked for other people that I've talked to. Bob.

Bob, thanks for your input. However, I did have the pistol sitting for about two weeks since putting the new spring in. So it does not seem that it made any differenc. I did find something about letting it sit with a fired case in the ejection port so I am trying that now.

I presume that you have the newer magazine spring installed;
frequently, problems like this occur due to a mismatch of the
recoil and magazine springs.

LCP,
Is it an "older" open end recoil spring? If so, please make sure that it is orientated correctly.

It is one of the older springs and I initially thought that could be the problem but I did a check and it was oriented correctly.
I do not understand the prior post raising a possible issue with the magazine spring? They are original mags with no spring changes and it is an early production pistol.
I have had it sitting with a case holding open the slide the last few days. I will try to get out this weekend and try it again.

It will not hurt giving it a "set" by doing what you are doing now.I do so overnite normally, and I use the "old style" spring also.(I have a stock of them ;))
I believe tracker was saying that it is possible to accidently switch out a mag/recoil spring (new style) with each other..

I will say that some peaople have had a slight problem with feeding after a recoil spring change, untill it "breaks in" again.Normally just a couple of mags though.

If you continue to have problems,I would order the new style springs to try, people have had great things to say about them and the mag springs too..

The new magazine spring makes all the difference.

If you haven't ordered new mag springs yet, I urge you to do so.
They certainly solved my feeding problems.
