Flawless
« on: February 25, 2008, 08:35:54 PM »
Tried out my R9S today. Boy is it smooth. It's got a little snap but nothing like the Guardian .380 I had.

I put 45 rounds through it. Started with 25 rounds of American Eagle 124gr. FMJ. No problems. Since I couldn't find any reasonably priced 115gr. GDHP I tried what I had. 147gr. GDHP. 20 rounds. No problems there either!

Here's a pic of my FIRST 6 rounds @ about 10 yards.

Now I'll clean it, load it up and carry it.

Excellent Jack!!!  I can say that from sitting here at CTU, you've given us a good field report.   Since I'm an HK guy myself, I'm trying to decide if I buy an R9 or a PSP now.  If I buy the PSP, I'll have to wait on the R9.  I'd like a P30, but not until they come with LEM (which according to the shot show report I got, will be coming).

Tumbling?
« Reply #2 on: February 25, 2008, 09:58:39 PM »
Could somewhat speculate about the target holes? 6 rounds and that much paper is missing?

The holes don't look quite as clean as I would have expected.

Is this possibly due to the fact that the bullet did not penetrate the paper squarely/perpendicularly to the bullet's axis.

There has been some discussion elsewhere that this type of tumbling is no uncommon and that the Speer Gold Dots perform better because of an increased OAL and sits just a tad bit deeper and thus closer to the rifling beyond the freebore.

Does anyone know if the bullets out of a Seecamp 380 also keyhole?

Any input would be appreciated

You know, in my haste I didn't notice the shape of the holes. Those were the 124gr. American Eagle FMJs. Heres another pic of all my shots. 20 of which are the 147gr GDHPs. These shots were somewhat rapid fire.

I believe the Seecamp LWS 380 keyholes as well; again, cartridge dependent.  I know some folks don't mind keyholes with their bullets, but I don't care for it.

Keep up the good work Jack.     No comments on my struggle between the PSP and R9 :(.     :) :)

Depends on what you want to do with it. Two totally different pieces. For IWB CCW I think the P7 is a great choice. I prefer the M8, Chantilly import  for general range/carry use. Nothing is faster than the regular mag release and the speed of the reload.

Since I haven't carried it yet it would be hard for me to tell you to get the R9S over a P7. It's a sweet shooter. I'm looking forward to putting it in my front pocket tomorrow. Even with it there I think I would carry something else IWB or OWB clothing permitting. That's where a nice Chantilly M8 would come in.

BTW- The police trade ins out there now are not PSPs. There weren't really many of those produced (only a couple hundred). The one's that were, were in the mid '70s.

Yeah, that heal release doesn't do it for me on the P7; but at the price of a 'Grade A' it's hard to pass up.  I'd rather have an M8 for the mag release.  I probably wouldn't carry it though, too different than all other things.  I like LEM because it's brain dead proof, like your R9...just put your finger on the trigger and pull - kinda like Lauren Bacall would say :).

The heavier 147gr ammo, in my experiance does tend to tumble & keyhole out of the R9.

Great shooting! Thanks for the report, too.

By the way, has anyone shot or have experience with 124gr. Starfire by Eldorado?

I didn't see it written up and had a couple of boxes on hand....

The 147gr GDHPs did not keyhole. Those came from the 124gr. American Eagle FMJs.

My R-9 was VERY problematic in the begining. As such I expierimented with a VARIETY of ammo. I have tried Starfires in my R-9 and they did not feed at all! Niether did hydrashocks. I even tried Glaser and Federals epanding full metal jackets ( I know +P is a no-no). All failed. My R-9 runs flawless now with Gold Dots, Golden Sabres, Silver Tips, and the SXTs but i will never again use ANY +Ps! And yes...Seecamps will keyhole too! The .380s tend to anyway. Oddly enough, the .25 a.c.p. Seecamp doesnt seem to.
