I think that is the very reason they changed the recoil springs to ones that are finished on both ends. People were forgetting which way they were installed when putting them back.

It seemed to me that it took just a bit more concentration
when installing the new mag springs to get it right than it
did the old style recoil spring which is now finished on both
ends.
