Anything I should know or do?
« on: August 03, 2007, 06:10:34 PM »
I am a small, "kitchen table", FFL dealer mostly dealing in FAL rifles.  I have purchased several pistols for my wife to try as she is interested in learning to shoot and obtaining her CCW.  I have a Kahr PM9, Glock 26, Springfield XD9 subcompact, a Rohrbaugh R9S Stealth and a Smith & Wesson 642 for her to try.  I would like to break them in and then teach her to shoot, etc.  We will keep what she likes and send the rest to good homes.  :)

My question is, do I need to do anything special to the R9S before the initial break in?  I have already disassembled the Kahr, stripped it and applied the appropriate lube to the appropriate points.  Is there something similar I should do with the R9S?  The other three are ready to rock out of the box but will get cleaned anyway.

Any advice appreciated.  This forum helped me in deciding to add the R9S to the trial group.  Thanks!

Welcome to the forum ergceo,

The only thing I would say is treat it the same as your PM9 as far as lube. A very light coating of gun oil on the barrel and slides after a good cleaning.

After 200 rounds or a little more you will probably have to change your rebound spring.  I compair mine with a new one and when I see a significant difference in the length I will change mine.

Also if you run a lot of rounds through it quickly it will get very hot. I will usually shoot a mag in between shooting some thing else. When I go out on a shooting session I will draw it out of my pocket holster and run all the rounds out of it just as it might have been a real need. I always try and make the first shot count.

Best of luck

Terry

Hello ergceo, The R9S is ready to go right out of the box. Although your wife will not like the gun (too much recoil , too much power)....I will PM you my address... your R9S will find a good home here.  ;D

Thanks guys.  I haven't taken any of the bunch to the range yet but hopefully soon.  My wife and several neighbors are taking their CCW this Fall.  There have been several female abductions in our area as of late...all of them being taken to the morgue when found.  My wife has finally relented that she needs to be able to protect herself and our kids when I am not around.  This will be her first foray into firearms other than plinking the .22 with me.  I want to make this as painless as possible which is why we are going to try several different ones.  I carry an XD45 and shoot both IDPA and USPSA for fun.  But that's too much gun for her, she says it's heavy. :)  However, she is not too sure about the small PM9 and Rohrbaugh.  In just handling them she says the weight is good but that they don't fill her hand.  Hmmm.  She likes the Glock and XD better as far as feel go.  The range will tell us more I am sure.

Anyway, enough rambling.  Thanks again!!  And I'll let you know if the R9S wants to relocate. ;)

ergceo:

Welcome to the Forum!

Before taking the R9 to the range, my only recommendations would be to read through the Chris' FAQ site linked at the top of the Forum, pack up some of the recommended ammunition, give the pistol a slight touch of gun oil along the rails and edge of the ejector port (just as a precaution), and then put it through its paces.

Let us know how your wife likes this little "pocket rocket."

Welcome to the forum..

What Richard says!!

When the pup comes from the factory, should be lubed and ready to go!! Just let it cool down after a couple of mags..It's not a range gun..

Anything that your wife carries, even a .22,is better than nothing if ever needed in the OS moment..

Once again - Welcome..

My wife and I went to the range and she put over 300 rounds down range through the following:  XD45, G21SF, Colt 380, G26, G19, Kahr PM9 and Smith 642.

The 45's were too much for her.  She didn't like the 380 at all.  The G26 didn't fill her hand.  She didn't like the wheel gun. The Kahr PM9...she couldn't even finish a full magazine.  It is so small and light that it really bit her pretty good.  She put it down and said, no more with that one.  After the Kahr she wouldn't even try the R9S.  She was afraid it would be worse than the Kahr.  She kept coming back to the G19 time and time again.  So...she is now the proud owner of a G19 and she has even agreed to start practicing and try IDPA.  :)

However, I now have an unfired R9S stealth.  I will post in the for sale area.

Thanks for all of your help to this point.
