My turn for frustration
« on: May 19, 2007, 08:41:46 PM »
Well dag nabit the honeymoon is over. I can't get a single mag. to run through without a fail to feed or stovepipes. I have changed the recoil spring 3 times. I don't think i even shot 100 rds on each one. I tried hydra-shoks, silvertips, and xts and various fmj;s and I get several jams per mag. I have not been able to get any non +p golddots, but I think it wouldn't make any difference. I have tried using different amounts of lube. I have used oil. I have used grease. I even used oil and grease. A lot of lube. a little lube. What the heck else can I do?. I never had a hiccup untill after I took it down the first time. Since then its been nothing but trouble. Yesterday I got 2 mags in a row to run ok, except the 2nd one had a stovepipe on the last round.  The funny thing is is that it usually shoots ok till the fourth round every mag. Then jams. I am going to call Maria on monday and see if I got mags with the old mag. springs. I just got it a couple weeks ago, and I would have thunk they would have given me the newer mag. springs, but maybe not. I hope I don't have to send it back to the factory. If anyone has any idea's let me know, PLEASE.  This would be my favorite pistol if I could get it to run right. In the mean time its back to my Springfield Micro compact 45 & my 32. Seecamp. I wish my 380 Seecamp was in.

grayfeathers,

I forgot how many coils are in the old vs the new mag spring but there is an easy test:  If it is pretty easy to top the mag off you have the old mag springs, if it is a real b**** to top off the mag then you have the new much stiffer magazine spring.  I bet you have the old mag springs.  If so order 2 new mag springs pronto and I bet everything clears up.

Take heart, there are many of us here who have R9's that run perfect, I suspect mag springs, but stay the course and the factory will make it right. You already know it's the best pocket carry 9mm out there. That LWS380 you got commin ain't bad either! :-*
No matter how you struggle and strive, you will never get out of this world alive.

Also to test between the old and new mag springs.  Take the bottom plate off and if the springs sticks out of the bottom at least 3 inches, you've got the new ones.  If only an inch or two, you've got the old ones.

Did you by any chance get the recoil spring turned around? The gun will not function right if you put the old style recoil spring in backwards. Just sounded suspicious since you said it only started acting up since you took it down for cleaning.

Make sure you have the latest magazine springs as well. That cured my failure to feed problems with my R9.

Also, please don't shoot +P ammo. I'm sure the gun won't blow up, but the gun has tight mechanical tolerances and that little bit extra pressure, plus maybe original underpowered magazine springs are enough to make the gun run out of time and not work.

Mine didn't work with the original magazine springs and standard pressure ammo!

I will check the mag. springs, but I think they are the new ones. The recoil springs that I have are the new ones and don't have the open end. They can go on either way. It says so in there packaging.  By the way. I got the take down tools from Steve Adair.  They are excelent. Without them, as many times as I have reassembled this thing, I would probubly have had a nervous breakdown.

Unfortunatly I do have the new mag. springs. I guess its going back to the factory. Today I am going to try one last time to clean, lube & fire. Its prob. just going to be another waste of good premo. ammo, but I just hate to give up. If anybody has any last ideas for something for me to try I am all ears. What really seems to be happening is that the emptys are not clearing the ejection port before the slide returns to battery. I will wait awhile before trying to see if anyone wants to chime in.

greyfeathers, is your wrist breaking when you shoot? sometimes just a little break will cause a problem.  Tom

I don't think my wrist is breaking. I strive very hard to not limp wrist. I have pretty good arm,  hand & wrist strength.

Something has occured since your first takedown for sure.. ;)

Are you for certain that everything is alligned correctly inside?Front to back, and side to side?

I still have the old springs in use, both mag and recoil,so I cannot say whats what on them..

Have you tried to put a slight "set" on the recoil spring?

Take an empty cartridge and keep the slide open for a day, then hand cycle a few times..May relieve the "newness" of your recoil spring?

To me it still sounds like a mag problem though?
 :(

Wishing you well on figuring out your pups illness..

It seems like a mag. problum to me as well. I have 3 mags. and they all fail. I am going to go now and try again. I will strip a mag. down and see if anything looks wrong. I will post results.

Just tried again, no change. One mag. all the way untill last round, then stovpiped. I was looking the recoil assembly and almost looks like it might be a little out of kilter. Not sure I may be seeing things. I am going to call the factory and have them send me a new one. I wish I could talk to one of the Rohrbaugh Brothers and see what their take might be. If the recoil assembly doesn't fix it its back to the factory. And I was so happy when I first got it. Oh well. I know it will work eventually. Sometimes I am just short of patience

Sorry, my mistake. In your original post it sounded like you may have been shooting some +P Gold Dots.

But you're right, I don't think it would make much a difference in function if the gun is working as it should.

Notice how things gotta be "just right"..

I am hoping this helps..
