Newbie - R9 and Questions
« on: May 17, 2007, 06:06:49 PM »
Hello all,

I would like to introduce my self to the forum.  I have been a Pistol shooter for about 1 1/2 years.  I have decided to to carry and received my Permit some time ago.  After carrying a Cougar 8000 Model L for a while, I decided that I would like to go smaller and am interested in the R9.  I need some advice.

There is an R9 without sights in one of the local shops which he is selling to me for $840 and he has a new R9 with sights for $1125.

My question is basically what should I look for in terms of buying this pistol used.  Its still a quite a bit of cash and I want to make sure I can trust it particularly if buying used.

Do the forum members think that the lack of sights makes a difference in a gun which is primarily for point and shoot.

Your help would be appreciated.  Thanks again

Arjuna70:

First of all, welcome to the Florum!

That sounds like a pretty good price for the used R9. I don't know exactly how many were made without sights, but they're a pretty "rare breed."  Here's a link to an early thread on the two models:

Hello and welcome,

If you choose the used gun, I would make sure I ordered two new mag springs:$8+ea, recoil springs:$5+ea, grip screws:cheap insurance.  Those parts will make sure your gun is running right.  If the used gun has the older carbon fiber grips, I would be torn because they are becoming collectible.

Whether to choose the sighted vs unsighted is pretty much your own taste.  The sights though small are very useful.  I have the sightless model and am totally confident in my abilities with this gun up close.

You might want to check w/Tom @ The Irish Gaurd a local sponser to this site for a good price on a R9.

I went by the shop today and decided to take the sightless R9 for $840.  It seemed like a very nice deal and the gun is LNIB.  The barrel is so clean that I'm not sure it was even fired.  It's in the box and with the warranty card.

Thanks for the responses.  Where do you order the springs and screws?  More imporantly, where can I get the takedown tools?  I sent a PM to RJ Hedley but I am not sure if he is making them anymore.

I'll pick it up next week and post pictures since I am not sure about the Carbon Fiber grips.

Thanks again for the help.

Order them directly from Rohrbaugh 1-800-803-2233.

Good luck on the take down/put together tool by RJ, keep a look out in the classified section here.  Thats how I came upon mine.

Congratulations on your new R9!

In addition to RJ, you might check with Steve Bedair regarding the takedown tools he has designed.  Photos and links are at this thread:

Good luck with your new "pocket rocket."  Be sure to read through Chris' FAQ site (the link is on a revolving banner at the top of the Forum's home page), and let us know how the R9 performs for you.
