How often do you shoot your R
« on: August 27, 2006, 06:49:50 PM »
In a thread about Magazines Springs someone a couple people said that people do not shoot their Rs enough to have to replace the springs.

Why would you not shoot your R as much as you shoot any other gun you have?

In fact I was thinking if I got one I would shoot it more because 9MM is cheaper than .45

I have fired around 200 rounds so far, from other posts it would seem that R9's are picky about what you feed them. I want to make sure that I know what mine likes.........so far Winchester 115 gr. Silvertip is jam free. Mine does NOT LIKE Federal 115 gr. HST

TJ:

Welcome aboard!

My personal response to your excellent question is that the R9 is one of the the smallest and lightest 9mm pocket pistols yet devised.  It has minimal tolerances and, like the Seecamp .380, literally pushes the envelope for its caliber.  To paraphrase Karl Rohrbaugh, it was designed to be "carried a lot and shot a little."

By the time I had run about 100 rounds through mine (No. 132) with no failures, I determined it to be absolutely reliable and in need of no further testing.  I now shoot it only occasionally, a clip now and then, just to maintain familiarity.

Timmy - the R9 is NOT a gun for high thruput use IMO - it is a thorobred pocket gun for self defence and not recreational shooting.

I would only consider using mine (perhaps) in a pocket pistol comp'.  To be honest - having a good ways back, ''proven'' it for its intended use I am reluctant to punish it other than by periodic practice sessions.  I will continue to use one of my SIG's for IDPA.

On reflection if shooting a pocket pistol comp' I'd use a snubby.

TJ,

I am guessing you have not held one in your hands yet.  When you get yours and take it down for cleaning before that first range trip and examine everything closley you will begin to realize that is not a gun you use for a lot of casual plinking.  Now haveing said that I will say they are very fun to shoot!  They point very naturally, recoil is not a problem but for some women it very well might be a definate problem and you definately get the impression you have a powerful gun in an incredibly small and light package.

I shoot my R9 occasionally...and then go get one of my XDs and plink with that -- can't wait for the 22LR conversions to come out...years hating plastic, and know I have two, which I think are wonderful, esp. after some modifications.  Where in TX are you located?  If you want to try shooting an R9 sometime in the near future, send me a PM -- I'm leaving for SC soon.

Hi Groo here
When I first got mine iI put 200 through it in one day.
<about 1and 1/2 hrs>. Then it went back to the factory for a soft barrel ,jam problem . When I got it back ,and talked with
Mr. "K"  I started to limit my shootiong to 50 or less and no   more
than 3 mags at a time cleaning every 50 or so . I use no oil but
Superlube greatly. If there is grease inthe gun dirt cant get in!!!
I shot a box of win superclean NT (sc9nt) and got one jam,
dad was trying to hold to light to cause jam , It did.
After that I got a case at the gunshow and that is all I use.
I now shoot once a month or so ,not countion oneses,
and then only 50 or less.
I have a sp101 if I want more though I will start using
my S&W 327 TR-R8 as deer season is comming.

I'm with those who established reliability, now only will run a magfull through it every so often (like every two or three months) to stay familiar with how it feels.  But it is such an intuitive little gun, I don't consider it necessary to practice a lot, though I carry mine every single day.

I want to do a lot of shooting, I use my Steyr S9, or my Ruger Mark I if just plinking.

I'm a little late getting into the conversation, and agree with test the gun for reliability and then shoot on occasion a mag or two, just to remain familiar with the feel of the action. I have put about 150 rounds through mine with zero jams using the Win. Silver Tips 115 gr hp. Love my pup!!!

Pretty much agree with what has been said. I have yet to shoot mine in the week or 10 days since I got it.It is difficult to shoot all the guns.I maybe take a half dozen to the range at a time.Any more and you spend two days claeaning them.I used to take 15 or 20 at a time to shoot but damn it is too much work to clean the bastages. :'(
