Pup barks!
« on: March 29, 2006, 05:34:03 PM »
Today was my first outing with the new pup.   I fired 30 rounds of Rem UMC, (range-required) and 2 rounds of Gold Dots.

I had no problems except for the previously reported happening of an incomplete chambering of the next-to-last round.  This only happened about 3 times, including once between the 2 Gold Dot rounds.   It happened using both magazines, so I think I can rule that out.

I really think that perhaps my concentration wavered and my grip eased,  as the times I specifically tried to duplicate this, it did not occur.

I found the recoil to be just slightly more than my Guardian 380, and the trigger pull to be a delight.  Much smoother and lighter than any DA I have previously fired.

Accuracy was good for the first outing.  At least, everything was centermass.

I had previously disassembled the gun, but had not removed the recoil spring assy, only removed the slide.  Today, I went the entire route.   Pin removed quite easily,  and I found the gun was cleaner than I expected.   Cleaned and lubed as per recommendations, then reassembled.  I found it pretty easy to reinstall the spring assembly without tools by standing the slide/barrel on the muzzle end, compressing the spring until the tip of the recoil rod was visible, then just slid the front end into place.

It worked out pretty well, and I am sure with more practice, it will be even easier.

My only question is that when sighting thru the cleaned bore, it appears as though the rifling is much more pronounced on one side of the rear of the barrel than on the other.   Perhaps this is by design, but none of my other short-barrel autos look like this.   I know that there is freespace built into the barrel, but I would think it would be symmetrical.

All in all, a very confidence-inspiring day!

HiFlight:

I just noticed your post from last week.  What type of lighting did you use for sighting through the barrel?  I use one of the Hoppe's Bore Lights, which for me helps to reduce distortion and permit closer inspection of the bore's surface.

Richard...

Your observation is very pertinent...I did not have a good borelight handy, and used a small LED light, which probably did not illuminate symetrically.   I think one side of the chamber was probably more highlighted than the other.

It seem very unlikely to me that, considering the type of equipment used in milling the barrel, that the chamber and rifleing would be misbored.
