AMMO SELECTION/RELIABILITY
« on: March 28, 2006, 09:16:23 PM »
Finally got out and tried my R9s.  Every load (gold dot 115 and 124, fed hydro shok 124, hornady 124 tap, and pmc 124 starfire) with exception of 124gr rem golden sabre failed to feed the 5th round out of the mag.  The 5th round was always feeding into the chamber roof with the 6th round feeding into the feed ramp.  Retracting the slide and lettting it go usually got it to feed the round.  Has anyone else had this 5th round problem?  Anyone find a solution?  Help!!! ???

First welcome to the forum.

Second I am sorry your first range trip had problems.  Did you have the same problem with both mags?

I believe somewhere in the the past several months there was some posts on 5th round FTF.  Maybe someone will find it and post the link.

Haven't found that thread Dave tho I do remember it.

This 5th round deal is very hard to explain as yet.  I guess it is something to do with the mag spring at one particular tension point.

The only thing I can think of right now is a mag clean and inspect.  Mmaking sure follower is free of any snagging - unlikely - and also to check for spring correct orientation.  Check on FAQ site (link in sig) - to see the pics on that Dan.

Welcome to the board BTW :)

The gun/mag were absolutely clean!  I didn't try the second mag/didn't have it with me.  The rem 124 golden sabre seems to have a larger profile than any other projectile.  Naturally the rem gold sabre was probably the least accurate and shot the furthest from point of aim. ???

I like Golden Sabers and would be happy if they fed reliably in my R9.
In fact, I think I might give them a try. I really don't know why I haven't tried them before. I guess I was under the impression they were not reliable with this gun.

I have had zero failures using the following:

Gold Dot
Winchester LEO Ranger 147 gr
Magsafe 60 Defender
Federal Hydra Shok 124 gr
WWB 115 gr

Harry:

I started out using 147 gr. Golden Sabers in my R9 and never had a problem with them.  However, based on the tests posted by Chris on his FAQ site, I've changed over to 115 gr. Gold Dots.

I'm willing to try just about anything at this point to get my R9 to function 100%. Gold Dots will not feed consistently, although ammo may not be the problem. But I need to find out, so time to try other ammo.

Still say try the other mag and see if you still get the same results.

Harry
Hope you get this solved soon.  Did you try the silvertips.

I had FTF problems and it was a mag problem. I think the mags sometimes need alittle tweaking. After I adjusted the feed lips everything was OK. This was a long time ago and i haven't had any problems since.

I just received some a few days ago and tried them out today. I fired 50 rounds of 115gr Silvertips.
The 4th round lodged nose up against the top of the chamber just like most of my other FTFs.
Then no more problems until the 44th round. I had a FTE - first time ever for that. The empty casing was only about 3/4 of the way out of the chamber and the next round was jammed up against the bottom of the feed ramp. I had quite a hard time getting it un-jammed.
So, two malfunctions in 50 rounds. I just can't seem to get through a range session without at least one malfunction and therefore I can not consider my R9 reliable enough to carry.
Now it's going to have to go back to Karl for the second time. As much as I want this gun to work for me, I'm beginning to get a sinking feeling that maybe it's just not meant to be.
$45 bucks a pop to send it back doesn't cheer me up either.

Harry,

I'm sorry to hear about the bad experience.  I hope it turns out OK.

danb,

Welcome to the forum.  I hope the problem clears up when using the other magazine.
