Finally Got Mine!
« on: June 07, 2005, 11:45:45 PM »
Hello and thanks for all the information and advise from a long time lurker who finally made the plunge.

I found Aregos in Hot Springs, Arkansas on GunsAmerica a few months ago and ordered from them.  Ben Arego was great to deal with and shipped my R9s overnight to my FFL the day after he got his shipment and I picked it up today.  Aregos seems to be getting quite a few Rohrbaughs of late with more on the way shortly.  I would highly recommend them for their fine service and the wait was not too bad (10 weeks in my case).

The salesman in the shop which acted as my FFL on this end was very intrigued with my R9s.  He asked that I give him a full report after I've had it for a while and put some rounds through it.  He was very impressed by the fit and finish as was I and when he tried the trigger, his eyes lit up.  I guess he knows guns.

Tomorrow or Thursday I'll get to the range to try it out.  I tried it in the K & D Pocket Defender I've had for a month.  It is slightly fatter in the grip than the Kel-Tec P-3AT I've been carrying for 2 years and the slide is about the same thickness.  I'll have to get used to the fatter grip and the extra weight.  I've been spoiled by the Kel-Tec as far as size and weight is concerned but now I'll be spoiled by the Rohrbaugh quality and firepower.  I must say that both my P-32 and P-3AT have been totally reliable and I forsee that I will still carry the P-3AT when I am wearing snug jeans if the Rohrbaugh grip prints too much for me.  But summer is finally here in Maine and it's shorts mostly from here on out and the R9s will be my everyday carry gun once I get it broken in and running well.

I got to the range (local R & G Club) late this morning and had the place to myself.  75 degrees, sunny,  and a light breeze.  It doesn't get better than that for shooting outdoors.  I brought the only 9mm ammo I had which was WallyWorld white box 100 pack.  I shot all 100 with 99/100 feeding flawlessly.  One round in the middle of a mag in the middle of the shoot nosedived into the feed ramp and did not feed.  A quick pull back on the slide and let go and it fed fine.  Great performance for its first time out.  Can't wait to see how it does once its broken in. haha.

Although it had an expected kick, I had no trouble shooting 100 rounds in less than 1/2 hour with no great discomfort.  I thought the R9s was much more comfortable to shoot than my Kel-Tec P-3AT.  Two or three mags with the Kel-Tec and I've had enough.  Not so with the Rohrbaugh.  Maybe it's that little extra bit of grip thickness and smoothness which makes the recoil not so bad.

The accuracy was fine but I need more practice keeping it on target through that long smooth trigger pull.

Partagas - welcome  :)

Sounds good - WWB is not always the best behaved ammo but - sounds like your new pup did good, very good.  It is as you say, less punishing than KelTec but even so - it ain't quite a ''recreational'' gun is it! - that said ... when considering it's prime purpose, it sure ain't that bad either!!

Glad to have you as another owner/member.

I spoke with Eric this evening and seems guns are coming out quite well right now - which should help get some long awaited orders filled pretty soon.

Welcome. The feed ramp jam is exactly what happened to my R9 the first time out. There are excellent recommendations on the forum as to what ammo to use and you should read them.

For me, the hardest thing was to get my FFL guy to get some standard velocity 9mm rounds in Gold Dot HP. In this area, GDHP equals +P.

You got me. I ordered the stuff and I haven't gotten it yet. My guy didn't say "no" so I thought GDHP comes in std. velocity configuration.

I will defer to other forum members who have more expreience than I, but I understand your confusion.

I think to play safe - it is wise to specify ''std pressure''.  I have a boatload of GD's which are +P - and marked such on headstamp.

These go in my SIG 226.

The std pressure stuff tho - is confirmed by headstamp too, if ever any doubt.

So - the choice is there but probably these days ammo stock in many stores may be biased toward the +P just cos of demand.

Go with the standard Gold Dot HP 115 gr or 124gr not the +P.         Tom

I've checked the box and top of rounds - nothing to reference +P - So if it's not marked + P would I be safe ?

IMO yes - my +P rounds are stamped that - others will not show it and so by inference have to be std pressure. :)

Partagas--Welcome..

Wish I could smoke anymore. ;)

115 or 124s are the way to go..Standard speed is the way to go with the R9.. 8)

I have shot the "pup" with WWB before with no problem too.. :o
