Yes, AMT is done for, hence the search for a better pistol.
Of course there is a weight ratio, and a strength ratio, and a density ratio, a weld ability ratio, a cost per lbs ratio, and cold and hot forming ratio, a machine ability ratio. Ratio is the number, quantity, and degree in which things can be compared.
The reason I asked is because, I would be happy to pay 50 – 75 % more for a great pistol that was offered in a titanium option.
I just looked it up, 1 cubic inch of Aluminum “high strength” i.e. 6000 or 7000 series is about .101 lbs vs. Titanium @ .164.
So size for size the Titanium is heaver. However density has nothing to do with strength, on its own. Lead is very dense about 11 grams per cubic centimeter vs. stainless at about 8 on the same scale. Gold is a 20, which would make a poor gun frame but a great conductor.
So I guess making a gun frame out of titanium is really no advantage unless its increased strength allows you to reduce the size of the frame. But this has already been achieved with good aluminum alloys and composites. I was expecting the titanium to be about 75% the weight by volume as aluminum, but that guess was wrong. Turns out it would just be a waste of money, unless of coarse you change the frame design and took advantage of the additional strength.
