Shot Show Bullet
« on: January 24, 2005, 09:20:27 PM »
Guys ... had a chat with Eric this evening and he gave me a link to the shotshow web site ... and if you look on the right, bottom of list - you'll see a link for Rohrbaugh.  Do go take a peek - it is an excellent vid of Karl using the R9.  This was apparently at the range near where those guys grew up and were first shooting.

Sweet.

If you have another chat with Eric, ask him when I can expect my gun. I ordered it in November and I am getting jealous of reading about you guys that have one.
Thanks.

BamaTex ... believe me - you are amongst a good many who will get their pieces just as soon as they can get into full swing.  Sorry you and others are having to endure this awful wait.

Right now, Slide machine is running off test samples and, the barrel machine is now I believe installed and being set up.  All is essentially heading for ''go''.  In meantime the SHOT Show is slightly in the way but they have to go ... I think that is understandable.

I can but imagine what they have been thru with this changeover - poor Eric is probably close to exhaustion and I can say with all honesty, is probably suffering part of his stress from knowing he is keeping folks waiting.  I doubt he could give an actual date yet but thru February they do hope to try and see things cranking up.

BTW - to all .... on that page I linked to - there is an option to sign up (free) for access to vids during SHOT Show - I did that, no hassles .... and hope to view some clips as show goes on.

Chris,

Well done and many thanks. Very cool video.
Why does Rohrbaugh say "meant to be carried a lot and shot little"? I have heard this before. However, it seems to me that the forum members who own R9s put a lot of rounds through it

BamaTex: I ordered my R9S in November (8th) and we are on the same lline. I feel the same way you do. This forum is a great way to "participate" but there is a distinct difference between the haves and have nots. Our goal is obvious and you're not  alone.

Chris, Thanks for the link.

My order was placed last July, when it was a 4-5 month wait. Not sure how their order book looks now versus capacity. I hope to receive mine sometime in February. I'm not in a rush-I want them to thoroughly shake out the new production setup before building mine.

With the exception of the guys who found one at a dealer or bought one from a selling member of this forum, the members here have all had lengthy waits for their R9. Patience IS a virtue-one of the few I possess.

It appears that, "good things come to those who wait", applies here.

Besides, you need the lead time to get a holster or two from the great makers who are members here.

Phil - in fact some of us probably excercize the pup more than needed!!  What the Bros R mean is really that this gun is not a Saturday regular range plinker - 100's and 1,000's of rounds.

Whilst it can and does cope with considerable thruput of ammo - it's very design - close tolerance - state of the art - does mean that it's primary purpose is exactly that ..."carried a lot and shot little".  It is not shall we say a ''recreational'' gun, or a competition gun ... its design and purpose is very well defined.

Chris makes a good point but I think elaboration is beneficial.

I doubt anyone would enjoy putting 150-250 rounds through the Rohrbaugh on a single trip to the range, as many would do with a .22 semiauto or full-size steel 1911.

However, every time I have fallen into the "carry a lot, shoot a little" trap, it showed the next trip to the range with that gun.  Granted, practice wtih some guns transfers over well to others (practice with my full-size .45 1911 transfers well to my Glock 26 despite differences in size and trigger mechanism), this tends to be less true in the case of pocket pistols (practice with my Kel-Tec P-32 does not transfer over well to my NAA G380 despite the similarities in size and trigger mechanism).

In preparing the written materials for a women's self-defense seminar, a friend who owns a martial arts school included the advice "If you carry a weapon, practice with it once a month or get rid of it."  I totally agree with the advice whether we are talking about a gun, knife, pepper spray, Kubotan, etc.  I think at least 50 rounds a month is a good idea with a pocket pistol.

Look for me there. I'll be the one with the big (you know what eating) grin;^) standing next to Eric and Karl, making all ya'll wish it was you instead of me.

I luckily have a business reason to go there so Uncle Sammy helps me pay for the trip. But you guys won't be disappointed that I went. More on that when I get back. Film at 11...

Wow! Shot Show, Las Vegas Classic Knife Show, Beinfield Antique Arms Show. I musta died and gone to heaven...

Bill - you are quite right and I maybe didn't make that point.

My ''carry a lot - shoot a little'' support is relative, very relative.  It is really just separating this gun from a plinker/fun gun.  True too - it ain't the most comfortable to shoot either as a recreational tool!

To balance what I said and support your comments - I would agree that some form of regular practice is essential.  I do what I think Duane has mentioned too.  On a regular range day - I'll finish up putting two mags thru the R9 .. and I can do this a few times without having to tear it down for a 50 round clean and lube.

It is very much a compromize situation ... but sure - the "carry a lot - shoot a little" is more of a ratio thing ... just don't shoot the heck out the gun for sake of it!

Gentlemen: Thank you for your response(s). What I imagine takes place is that when you get your R9s your enthusiasm takes over and you shoot it a lot (at first) until you are satisfied that is as good a gun as it is. Then, over time, recognizing that it is not a target gun, the R9 finds its way into your pocket and comes out only occaisionally.
