Timely Reminder -- Check those screws

I took my j-frame out of pocket and put in the safe for the night.  Later I noticed something in my pocket -- turned out to be my cylinder release latch and retaining screw...

Luckily that would not have stopped the gun from firing, but it's a good reminder to occasionally check exposed screws (including your R-9 grip screws)!

Excellent advice. I was recently giving a "safe queen" Colt Mustang a little exercise and had a grip screw back out on me. Which brings up another trick to remember -- always have a small screwdriver with you, in the range bag, as part of a multitool, or on a key ring.

Yep!  I carry a multitude of tools to the range including a wooden dowel and a quite heavy plastic hammer that comes in handy for poking out a brass casing that swells up in the cylinder of a .454 after shooting (Freedom Arms), 300 gr.  Haven't had to do that but once, but was good to have at the moment.  Needless to say, those tools still make the trip to each shooting session.

Not a bad idea to have that little allen key at the range for the R9 in case of a loose screw, too.

That is a good idea, and the hexdriver for the R9 is definitely in the tool mix.

In another thread regarding a rather expensive pair of grips I had obtained for my R9, I mentioned that I had cushioned them with some mini rubber washers (O-rings) under the screw heads.

It occurred to me that in addition to cushioning the forces exerted on the grip panels during firing, the mini washers could also help prevent grip screws from backing out. I tried them on that Colt Mustang I mentioned earlier in this thread (the one that tends to throw out its grip screws), and they work. The screws stayed firmly in place throughout a range session.

I use 222MS loctite on all my revolver screws, w. good results - I shot an IDPA match one time w. my 329 NG, and full loads - the screws w. the loctite stayed in the gun, the two I forgot (the ones holding the rear sight on) had just about come completely off.)

That is a good suggestion but I'm going to try it awhile without loctite for the first time. In my opinion it was harder to remove the screws than to keep them in the frame. We shall see. The O ring idea is a good thought without the downside of loctite being too tight.
