I had a scientist at the Hanford nuclear facility tell me that in the near future all our electrical needs would be supplied by batteries. He said that the new designs could "provide" enough storage capacity to "take care of us" and all the worries and hassles about oil, natural gas, hydroelectric projects etc. would be over. I'm really not much of a cripple shooter, so instead of asking him embarassing questions I just walked away.     Gene

Gene,
Not being much of a baseball fan you had me with (cripple shooter);D
( It brought some disturbing thoughts to mind )
In case anyone else has never heard that term.

Shoot the cripple
When the pitch count is 3 balls and no strikes, the pitcher is presumed to need to pitch inside in order to obtain a strike. The name comes from the belief that the next pitch will be easy to hit; since the pitcher has to throw a strike in order to pull close in the count, getting a hit will be as easy as "shooting a cripple".

Unless there is a different meaning.

Gene,
Just because the guy is a "scientist", that doesn't mean he's not ignorant.  You did well to walk away.

I'm a (retired) mechanical engineer and still filter information thru my internal engineering calculator.  I would have asked the scientist where we're gonna get the rare earth elements needed to make the high tech electric motors.  They're called
Lanthanide Series elements.  Stuff like Neodymium and Ytterbium needed for the super magnets.  The answer: China!
And the sad part is we have Lanthanide reserves in the U.S. but it will take 15 years to bring commercial mining on line.

Great.  We trade  the boot of OPEC on our throats for the boot of China.  Without getting too overtly political about the whole deal, I say we'd better add, "Dig, (Lanthanides) baby, dig" to "Drill, baby, drill!"  If we need oil and we need rare earth elements to support our civilization, we better get to it.

Steve

John, I've heard several definitions of the phrase. When I was a kid my Dad used to take me bird hunting a lot. If a bird was just wounded he would finish it off without shooting it. Guys that would shoot them he called "cripple shooters". In the above post, the engineer I mentioned was an idiot. I felt that he was'nt worth arguing with so I dropped it. This has absolutely nothing to to do with oil or idiots, But something much better. Your mag extensions arrived today. They fit perfectly and look great! Thank you.    Gene

Gene,
I guess not having hunted with you and dad put me at a disadvantage on that one, and Wikipedia was no help.  :-X
Glad you are pleased with the extensions.

I heard it used a lot back when I used to shoot pool. When a guy would shoot a straight in or otherwise easy shot everyone would hooraw him for "shooting cripples". I always tried the hard shots. That way when I missed I had a good excuse.      Gene
