Any other musicians here?
« on: February 25, 2010, 02:49:54 AM »
I just put my guitar down after a few hours of recording and got to wondering if there might be any other musicians on the forum.
If so, what do you play?
Me, I'm a certifiable music gear nut.

Trombone.  Not professional, just for fun.  My church has a brass ensemble that I play in and my employer is trying to start a big band.

I play a little guitar.  I spend more time now making custom acoustic guitars.  Here's the first:

It's a dreadnought size.  The back, sides, and neck are mahogany.  The soundboard is sitka spruce.  The fretboard is rosewood. The rosette is koa.  The headstock is covered with lacewood; the pickguard is lacewood.  Though a bit hard to see, the spots on the fretboard are also lacewood.  The bindings are curly maple.  The maker's mark is genuine ivory, scrimmed with my initials.  There's a piece of genuine ivory on the heel of the neck.  The guitar was essentially made from scratch.  The neck was preshaped, but I did the final shaping and finishing.  The bridge was already made.  A local scrimshaw artist did the scrim work.  I made everything else.

I've also made some playing picks.  These two are samples.  The one on the right is lacewood, the one on the left is genuine ivory.

I'm in the process of making another guitar as we speak.  It's smaller in comparison to the one above.  The back and sides are black walnut; the top is redwood.  The neck is mahogany.  The fretboard, bridge, and rosette are cocobolo.  The spots on the fretboard will be genuine ivory.

Trombone, here.  Very limited basis, now.  Had our own band in the school days; played for the High School Proms and such.

K-Man.  Excellent work.  Do you sell what you make?  Just wondering.

I know just enough on the guitar to amaze myself.

Just a Fender "Mexi-Strat" that a friend picked up at a pawn shop, and my only amp is a battery-powered box with headphones.

Non-musicians may be fooled for a minute or two, but you guys would run away screeming, with your fingers plugging your ears!

Thanks.  Our goal is to offer up for sale what we make.  The first is a keeper though.  ;D

Fine looking guitar, I always appreciate fine craftsmanship especially in wood.

I've always liked the guitar, have one, and never took the time to learn to play.  That's on the agenda, though, to do that very thing.
