Liberty Arms 22 Cal Derringer
« on: February 15, 2010, 02:22:38 PM »
I acquired a Liberty 22 Cal double barrel derringer from my Mom. She got it from her father in the mid 50's it was not new when he gave it to her. On the top of the barrel is stamped Liberty Arms Corp Montrose. on the left side of the barrel is stamped Cal 22 SLLR. by the trigger is the serial number On the right side is stamped Made in Germany also near the trigger is stamped Germany. It is in good shape but won't fire. The hammer seems like it works good when I cock the trigger. There is a barrel lock you move that lever and the barrel tips up to load . I've tried with a single shell in the top barrel , the bottom barrel but did not want to try it with both shells in. Can someone give me more information ? I'll try to add a picture later.

bogart10.  Welcome to the Forum.  You certainly have an interesting .22, for sure.  With all the expertise here on the Forum, I'm sure there's someone who can help.  Again, welcome.

bogart:

I believe there used to be three companies which sold firearms under the "Liberty" banner -- one based in Montrose, California, another in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and a third in Spain. The Montrose company operated under the name of "Liberty Arms Corp.," and imported inexpensive firearms from West Germany and Italy back in the 1950s. Those guns, I believe, were actually manufactured by such firms as Rohm, Herbert Schmidt, and Reck Firearms. Your derringer would appear to be one of those guns.

Due to its lineage, the derringer will have great sentimental value for you personally. Otherwise, the "Liberty" guns don't seem to be in much demand on the collectable market. If it were mine, I would simply keep it as a family heirloom. I also might not want to subject it very much to the pressures of modern-day ammunition.

Good luck to you.
