Considering Change
« on: May 20, 2008, 03:02:59 PM »
Hi folks. I'm about ready to take the plunge after a variety of carry guns over the years. Started with a Colt Mustang Plus II IWB. Too uncomfortable in Florida's tank top & shorts weather. Switched to a Kel-tec P3AT in a Guru back pocket holster & have been happy for quite some time. Been wanting to up the power but not go back to being uncomfortable. The R9 seems like the ticket. Great looking & I've yet to see much negative feedback. Believe I'll sell the Colt to help offset the cost. Any other P3AT converts out there? Is the SLIGHT difference in size a problem in dress slacks or jeans?

Welcome Neil!  I hope you enjoy the forum as much as I do.  The Rohrbaugh R9 is a awsome little package for sure.  Your right about the size difference being "SLIGHT".  Here is a comparison pic of a R9 with a LCP (same size as the P3AT).

I carry mine every day in jeans with NO problems.  There is a weight difference compaired to the Kel-tec but it only takes a couple days to be used to a tad more weight.  Those Colts bring good money these days.  You should have no problem selling it.  Good luck!  Keep us posted too.

Welcome to the forum.  I started with a P3at but was unhappy with the workmanship.  I got a Ruger LCP and loved it but I felt that 9mm was as small as I would like to go for a carry weapon. I could never find anything in 9mm that I considered comfortable for pocket carry.  I saw a used R9 at a local gun store and it was just what I was looking for.  Unfortunately by the time I got back to the store with money it was gone. But I am a very happy owner of a new R9s and would not trade it for anything. The only downside is a little more weight but I have gotten used to that. Having a 9mm in a package about the same size of the P3AT is great and the workmanship is second to none.  I usually carry in the rear pocket and the R9 disappears just as well as the LCP or P3at.
Don't let your worries get the

I'm wearing my R9s right now and I'm wearing Dicky's shorts  8).

I have the clipdraw and it works very well.

I have the P3at and it's a little lighter but the difference is small.

I sold my Colt Mustang for this gun (LOVE the COLT) but can't carry at all.

My wife thinks I have a crush on my gun because I've already purchased it and all accessories and still look on the board.
I might. but it's a VERY worthy crush.

I also have the LCP and REALLY love that gun too but I need to know I can knock a BG down.

Neil:

Welcome to the Forum!

I, too, formerly carried a Colt Mustang .380 IWB, then changed to carrying a NAA Guardian .380 as a pocket pistol. When the R9 prototype was unveiled at SHOT 2002, I ordered one sight unseen. In May 2004, I took delivery of R9 No. 132, and it has been my "always gun" for the past four years. In my opinion, it is simply the finest pocket pistol yet produced. It came with blue carbon fiber grips which I have replaced with a pair of the new aluminum panels. Here it is, with its Hedley leather, in a shot taken a few minutes ago to commemorate four years of flawless service.

Thanks for the feedback. Especially the comparison pic. Interesting to hear from other guys who've had the same issues. I really like my Colt too & hate to sell it but the closest I ever got to comfortable with it was in a Smartcarry "thunderwear" type holster. Much prefer rear pocket.
