My new HK USP .45 Compact can be carried Cocked and Locked, but that's way over my head.

I may try it sometime, maybe for a week, and see if I shoot my leg.  I was thinking about walking up and down the beach where there is lots of sand.

Did you ever carry that way?

Bill, The only way to carry a Colt type 1911 is cocked and locked. In the early days of ISPC all the ranges were hot. Everyone carried that way. But no one was allowed to touch the gun out of the holster. Its a mind thing and it takes getting use to. After awhile, it becomes second nature. The safety needs to be set strong so it can't be brushed off. Remember theirs a grip safety also.

I was just thinking about the grip safety, too.

The problem is that the HK USP does not have one.

But, I know what you mean.  As long as the controls and trigger are safe with the holster, everything should be fine.

It's getting into the right frame of mind that is slowing some of us down.  I really prefer the single-action mode.  There's less chance for the pistol to wiggle around while you are pulling the trigger.

I even keep trying to pull the hammer back on my S&W 642 J-frame, but it's not there.

In any event, I consider a grip safety to be an essential component of "cocked and locked" carry for a single-action 1911-type pistol.

Tried that.  Didn't work.  Had to throw myself on mercy of court.  Still in game, but playing with yellow card.
