Do you use a holster for pocket carry and if so, why.
-
We use a "pocket holster" for "pocket carry" at a minimum to secure the firearm in-position and to protect the trigger from accidental engagement i.e. digging for keys or whatnot. A holster also protects against abrasion.

Yes! Always carry in a holster. :)

Good question.
My take on this:
Always use a pocket holster for pocket carry, foremost to protect the trigger, as well as for proper draw orientation, and protection against pocket lint entering the mechanism.
Never keep anything else in that pocket. It now is relegated solely to the holstered firearm. Put your keys elsewhere, they can cause unintended discharge, or hinder smooth draw.
A pocket holster also will protect the finish of the firearm.
A pocket holster also helps to mask the outline of the firearm for better concealment.
When returning the firearm to it's holster after drawing from the pocket, take the holster out of the pocket, put the gun in the holster, and then put them back in the pocket as a single unit. Never re-holster in the pocket.
The gun should live in the holster. When disarming leave the gun in the holster.

I don't carry yet, I have at least another 100 days or so until my rights in Illinois are finally restored to me and other Illinois citizens.
But anyway, I also think the holster helps keep lint and debris out of the pistol.
I don't know where the hell lint comes from, it's like it leaks in from an alternate universe or something. No mater how well I clean out my pockets, after a while lint sneaks in there. And almost every time I check my belly button, lint is there too.

Absolutely, I use a holster that covers the trigger of any pistol or revolver I carry in a pocket, and I carry nothing else in that pocket. I would consider anything else to be simply a variation on the suicidal game known as "Russian roulette."

I agree with everyone here.... just little confused by Griff's last statement.
"The gun should live in the holster. When disarming leave the gun in the holster."
Many years ago I was told to never store a gun in the holster because it could add to
possible trap moisture around the gun. I never gave it much thought but now I'm wondering
is that true or just a wise tail?

Basic gun safety: What Griff and Richard S said! I think that Griff was perhaps saying was if you are removing the weapon from your person, but storing it loaded, it should remain in the holster as a safety measure in order to protect the trigger from accidental discharge. Otherwise, DO NOT STORE A HANDGUN IN THE HOLSTER as it may well create damage from trapped moisture.

Thanks

I have developed as my personal policy to limit unnecessary gun handling.
At night, when I disarm before bed, I remove my R9, still in it's pocket holster, and put it away.
The next morning, when I get dressed, I put it back in my pocket, still in the holster.
I clean and re-lube the gun at the first of each month, with a thorough inspection of all components, including magazines and ammo.
If I have a range trip, or an event that introduces humidity, I go ahead and do a take-down and cleaning.
I have tried to make the whole operation very methodical and purposeful in order to eliminate variables.
I think it is a good way to reduce the possibility of mistakes by doing it the same way all the time, having a protocol eliminates variables that could result in a mistake.
I don't leave my guns in leather holsters when stored in the safe.

I've been gone for a while so here's my two cents. I always carry mine in a front pocket Desantis holster. The trigger is always covered which makes me feel much better. Countzero congrats on ILL finally seeing the light. It's long overdue. I hope they provide reciprocity with Ohio.

Man carrying a pistol, with no holster, in his pocket with a bunch of other junk. Reaches into his jacket pocket to pull out his wallet and his gun falls discharges when it hits the ground (no drop safety).

Confucious say: "Man who carries firearm in pocket with no holster covering trigger stands to lose probably much blood, possibly his 'family jewels', and in either event his pride and/or his life."
