Title: Just Showing Off the Prized Possession
Post by: Richard S on September 17, 2013, 10:10:59 PM
I just gave No. 132 her regular clean and lube.  I think she's looking good in her ninth year of EDC use.

Thank you, Bob.

I attribute the near mint condition of this Farmingdale and its accessories to regular maintenance using FrogLube products and Renaissance Wax.  Before I discovered FrogLube, I used Ballistol for cleaning and lubrication.  However, application of a fine coat of Renaissance Wax to the outside surfaces of the entire rig has been the final step in all maintenance sessions for the past nine and one-half years. I figure that if the NRA Museum, the Smithsonian, and the British Museum all use Renaissance Wax for the firearms they have on display, it's good enough for my own collection.

A great testimony to the R9, and your dedicated maintenance.
It truly shows you are a proud owner.

Chameleon:

Thank you for your kind remarks on my “pocket rocket.”  In some ways she seems to be like a fine wine – only getting better with age.

My wife recently convinced me to take a Caribbean cruise with our two daughters, a grandson, and a grandniece (the granddaughter of my wife’s now-deceased sister).  The cruise was actually a high school graduation present for the niece.

Of course, I was required to leave my R9 locked in the gun safe back at home.

I found that walking around for a week without “No. 132” in my pocket actually brought on symptoms that might be compared to withdrawal, especially during port calls.  The symptoms included a nagging sense that something wasn’t quite right coupled with a slight and unaccustomed feeling of vulnerability.  I didn’t like it.  I didn’t like it one damned bit.  The experience made me appreciate all the more the carry permit in my wallet, my State’s “shall issue” statute, and the Second Amendment to our Constitution that made both of them possible.

My greatest complaint about the R9 (and also the Seecamp) is that I forget that I'm wearing them.  I haven't yet entered a post office wearing one, but several times had to leave a restaurant to hide the pistol in the car safe after forgetting that I had it in my pocket when I ordered a cocktail.  Oh, well...nothing is perfect!

John:

The comfort of carrying a concealed R9 can indeed tend to lull one at times into forgetting that it's there.  Twice I've had to do a "tight 180" as I was about to enter a post office and return to the car to lock up my R9.  I've also had to do that restaurant exit-and-return before ordering an alcoholic drink in order to comply with Tennessee law.  My own solution to the problem has been to try keeping myself in what used to be described as "Condition Orange."  I find that doing so not only heightens my situational awareness but also helps me to remember that I am armed.

Richard, I hear you loud and clear. My feelings exactly when I visit my family in CA. I have to lock my guns in one container, and the ammo in another.
I feel emasculated, somewhat. Thank goodness for quality one-handed tacticle knives.

And thank you for the great photo.

As far as the post office thing, yes, many times I find myself going back to the truck.  :P

Reinz:

You are right, as always, in noting that the tac folder is a comforting substitute when it is forbidden to carry a firearm.  The rules of this cruise my wife cajoled me into taking, however, forbade passengers to carry any so-called "weapons."  As a result, this time I took a page out of DDGator's book and included in my luggage a small 3-1/2" tac flashlight with a strike bezel.  It wasn't much, but it was something to have in the pocket when walking around island ports of call.

I had always said that the only cruise boats I would consider would be chartered bareboat sloops of which I would be the captain, and I have preferred to sail out of Red Hook Bay in St. Thomas, U. S. V. I., in the past.  In such situations, although handguns are forbidden in the V.I., 12-guage flare guns and phospherous flares are available at any boating supply shop.  Those things can serve as fine tools for repelling any unwanted "boarders."

All in all, I found the "commercial cruise experience" to be much like being herded around like cattle.  However, the ladies and teens enjoyed it, so I tried to keep a smile on my face and "went along to get along."

Good choice on that strike bezel Richard !  And you are quite the gentleman with your ladies.

Your mentioning the 12 ga flare gun brings back old memories. Before concealed carry was legal in Texas, I had been carrying for years anyway. However, I did keep a 12 ga flare gun in the console at all times, for I knew it was legal.

Also, when I skied competitively, we skied on a very small lake just big enough for a slalom course and a ski jump. The lake was in a rough part of town. Back then competitive ski boats did not have "dry spots".  After a day of skiing, everything was wet. So I was not about to bring a firearm aboard. The 12ga flare gun was quite comforting, for we had MANY Altercations with Riff Raff and unruly fishermen.

Newt:

The grips are CITES-compliant elephant hide over standard Hogues.

Speaking of flare guns, has anyone had any experience with a "sub-caliber device?"

As Mr. Spock might say, "Fascinating."

I do like the idea of the flare gun but have never seen one in a gun store...where might one find one for sale?

That is the problem; the best were German made Geco or H&K, in that order, which are difficult to  find now.

Tracker is right.  The high quality German flare guns are hard to find.  You can get on a waiting list for one at this site:

The same applies to this Polish-made licensed copy of the H&K 26.5 mm:

Less expensive pieces, such as the Orion line, can be found at major marine supply stores and on Amazon:

Marine stores.
I carried one on my boat, but it was plastic. I wouldn't fire rounds from those, but I did have it behind my back one time when I thought we were going to be boarded offshore. It turned out fine but at the moment, my anti-gun wife was below wishing she had an AR-15.
