Title: Scout Rifle

I "built" one last Winter. Savage .22 with the goal of getting a can for it in the next 12 months. It's a sweet shooter.

I had picked out a S/A SOCOM II and then I did a 180. My next rifle project will now be a SBR AR platform in .300 Blackout. But to answer your question, of those you listed the S/A in the SOCOM II would be my pick.
I want to get a can for the SBR and I like the .30 cal but ability to use AR magazines. Just my two cents for you.

The Ruger Scout was my inspiration to "build" my Savage. I couldn't get the Ruger, so I pacified myself with the Savage until demand eased off a bit. That's a Crazy Eddie INSANE price. Are there any more available at that price?

The store had a stack of about 50 of the Ruger scouts sitting on thier floor at the time. Special Ruger pricing. The will still beat anyone's advertised price in the country. Even on the Internet. They had the smith and wesson performance center guy one time and he did a free trigger job on my Governor.

I have a Leupold scout scope on mine and it points nicely and should make for a great all-around gun. I have always liked the scout rifle concept and built myself a 10/22 scout for small game hunting and plinking. It sports the same scope and is pretty lightweight and easy to tote around in the field all day.

Ruger or Savage.

Ruger is heavier, but has a better stock, and it's built like a tank.

Savage is lighter, better trigger(IMO), Mags don't stick out a foot from the gun should you need to shoot from prone position, and it's cheaper. Their also making it in 7.62x39mm now. I'd still go for the 308 though.

as someone who has shot/handled both, their great rifles for not a lot of money.

I do not yet own a Scout, but I have one rifle that I believe is not too far removed from the Colonel's criteria for a "general-purpose rifle" -- this Israeli Military Industries Timber Wolf Pump Rifle:

The Timber Wolf is no longer manufactured, but they occasionally show up on the auction boards. This one of mine has been coated in Wilson Combat ARMOR-TUFF® Protective Firearms Finish (OD Green and Black). Until I can add a true Scout Rifle to my collection, this Timber Wolf will continue to serve as my "general-purpose rifle."

When I do spring for a Scout, I am currently inclined to think it will be for one of the Ruger Gunsite models.

Post by: tracker on August 30, 2012, 12:37:35 PM: Although it falls outside of the definition of a Scout rifle because of its length and weight, the Remington 700 SPS is a fine rifle with an excellent trigger. If I were in the market for a .308 it would be at the top of my list.

I always liked the pump 22s but never bought one maybe I will put one on my list. 8)

I got my Ruger Gunsite Scout, 4 extra mags, Leupold scout scope, rifle case, and 100 rounds of ammo for less than that.

I had considered getting the Ruger 77/357 rifle and having a smith drill and tap a rail on the barrel for a forward-mounted scope. Kind of on the fence between that and the 77/44. I want to use it as a deer rifle and for plinking. 357 is cheaper and I get one additional round in the mag, but less powerful. I've never hunted deer with a pistol cartridge before so not sure how much of a difference it would be.
