...and bought a brand new R9 Stealth on May 19th. I couldn't be happier! I've always admired this little pistol's design and workmanship and I can't imagine a more perfect pocket pistol.
I took it out for its inaugural range sessions on 5/20 and 5/21, putting a total of 200 rounds though my new PUP. Ammo used was Winchester 115 FMJ and Speer 115 and 124 GD. Of course, I changed out the recoil spring after it digested the 200 rounds. The only hiccup I had was one failure to feed with the Win FMJ, where the bullet nose hung up on the bottom of the feed ramp. I couldn't account for why that happened, but had no other failures.
I consider myself to be a pretty good pistol shooter, but at first, I had difficulty figuring out how to shoot a pistol this small. Eventually, I discovered I have to put a death grip on it and choke up on the grip as much as possible to get decent groups out of it. I was finally getting roughly 3" groups at 15 yds with the 115 GD, which it seems to favor over the other 2 ammo.
I ended up buying a set of checkered VZ grips for it, which feel much better than the stock grips, and I feel the checkering will help give me better control. I haven't had an opportunity to shoot it since I got the new grips.
Pics forthcoming... once I figure out how to post pics.
I've been reading this forum for several months prior to buying my R9. There seems to be a knowledgeable group of folks here, and I look forward to becoming a contributing member.

Welcome to the club T-Man!
And congrats on your purchase. Glad to see that you are enjoying it as well.
Good range report. And yeah, a lot of us love those VZ's.
Please post often.

Congrats on the R9, Ted. Nice report and I look forward to the pics.

Supposed to pick up mine today. Can't wait.

T-man ....welcome & enjoy your new R9!
-
Thanks for the welcome, guys!
One other thing...
I kept hearing how "difficult" these pistols are to take down and reassemble, but I didn't find mine to be especially difficult at all. The recoil spring assy took a little effort to put back in place, but I didn't need any tools to do so, and I managed not to launch anything across the room in the process. ;D
My go-to gun oil has been Break Free CLP, so that's what I used to lubricate the R9 upon reassembly. Has anyone had any issues with this oil not working as well as another or any reason I shouldn't use it? Is there any particular lube more recommended than the others?
Thx!

Welcome to the forum and enjoy the PUP.

Over the years I've tried many but my current "favorite" - for my pup as well as all my other guns, is Gun Butter (there's a thread on this forum about it). I particularly like that it stays "in place" and doesn't migrate away from bearing surfaces, it stays "wet" for as long as I've had to test it, and it makes cleaning much easier as carbon and crud wipes off easily from any surface coated with it. It also just makes the gun "feel smooth".

This is my go to oil as well. Love the stuff on everything from my AR to my 1911 and I'm sure my pup will get it as well

Ted:
Welcome to the "Club," and thanks for posting that excellent report.
There are a lot of superb gun cleaners and lubricants out there and everyone will have his or her favorites. I personally use Ballistol and a touch of SuperLube along the slide/frame interface. To help preserve the exterior surfaces I use Renaissance Wax and silicone wipes.

Ted, Welcome to the group. Enjoy the new pup.

Ted, conrats on the new pup. FMJ can be alittle long. Tom

It's been 1-1/2 years since I joined and last posted. I've undergone a lot of major changes in my life that has prevented my return, but one thing has remained constant -- my Stealth is still with me. I normally wouldn't revive a thread this old, but since I'm the OP and it provides the background for how my love affair with my Stealth began, I thought it was the perfect place to post a couple pics.
Since my last range report, the Stealth is still running flawlessly, and it has exceeded my expectations! So... here she is in all her stealthy splendor, complete with checkered black cherry VZ's...

Ted
Welcome back.
Your PUP is looking good! :)
-
It's good to have you back, Ted. Those VZ grips really set off that Stealth of yours.
Don't be a stranger.

What grain of Gold Dots are those?
What ammo do you normally fire through your R9 ?
How often do you shoot it?
About how many rounds do you put through your R9 each time to the range?
Inquiring minds want to know... :)

They're 115's. Tried the 124 GD's as well, but I think the 115's shoot a little better.
I normally shoot Winchester 115 FMJ for practice. It's cheap and it shoots pretty well in mine. I shoot the 115 GD only on occasion, and it's my carry ammo.
I shoot it about once a month. Don't shoot it as often as my other pistols. As much as I love it, I have to admit it isn't as fun to shoot as my Sig P229, H&K P7, 1911's, and various .22's... but it's much more comfortable to carry!
When I first got it, I was shooting 50 - 100 rounds through it each time I took it to the range. Have replaced the recoil spring twice. Now, I shoot 18 - 20 rounds each range session.

I have a P7M8, I just took it through a course earlier this month - it's a GREAT pistol.
I've stocked up on 124gr ammo - Gold Dot, Lawman and Blazzer Brass and I'll probably run them through the R9 in that order.
It's good to know though that 115gr goes through your R9.

Yep, that's what I've got -- P7M8 PSP. Sent mine to Robar for NP3 Plus coating, added Trijicon night sights, and dressed her up with G4U walnut grips. It's a fantastic piece! It shoots incredibly well, and I love the way the grip feels in my hands. It's a shame the P7 family was discontinued. I guess they were just too expensive and didn't have high enough mag capacity.
-
congrats on R9
Winchester White Box WWB is garbage ammo
my R9 has trouble with it as well
for the same price PMC bronze shoots perfect
and of course speer 124s
keep shootn
-
What about the Blazzer Brass 124gr FMJ ??
Has anyone had experience with them in their R9 ?
I have never had problems with this ammo, I've never seen signs of QC problems (like I have with Remington and Winchester)
I bought a bunch because I figured if my R9 would shoot OK with 124gr Gold Dots and 124gr Lawman, it would probably do OK with Blazzer Brass 124gr FMJ.

Expensive yes. Maybe you were not aware of the double stack mag version, the P7M13, Now THAT one is EXPensive! :P
-
I have a P7M8 also. Absolutely one of the finest pistols I've ever shot. Absolute shame that they were discontinued by HK.

Yes, I'm very aware of the double stack P7M13 and P7M10, but in comparison to the 15+ round capacities available today from Glock, H&K, Sig, S.A., etc. those are still "low capacity" by today's standards.

I agree for the most part, but it's much more available in my neck o' the woods, for whatever reason. Still, I haven't had much trouble with it sufficient to prevent me from buying it when it's cheap and readily available. It shoots acceptably well in my R9 for practice. I've used the PMC Bronze quite a bit as well, but again, I don't find it in my local stores as often as the Win white box stuff. I have shot the Blazer ammo. Basically, I buy whatever non-+P cheap 115 - 124ish gr. ball ammo I can find for practice sessions and fire just enough Gold Dot to gain trust in it for carry. Unlike my rifles, I don't handload for my pistols much.

Gee I just learned someting! I didin't know that a P7M13 and a Browning HI Power were considered "low capacity" like 7-8 rd 1911s . :o

Yep, they should have called it the Browning Low Cap. ;D

Compared to the current gen 9mm full-size pistols, i.e., a 17-rd Glock 17, 16 rd XD, they are! "Low" capacity is a relative term based on what else is available. Despite the P7's rather compact size, it's weight is in the full size class due to the all-steel construction. Most pistols of similar weight have at least 2 additional round capacity. Even their M10 .40 is 2 rds shy of a Sig P229, for example. The typical 7-8 rd 1911 is chambered for .45, so it's not an A - A comparison. 1911's have their own appeal due to the wide variety of aftermarket parts and customization options. Plus, it just has that historical 1911 mystique. It's the eternal bore dia vs. capacity debate, and both sides have merits. A sizable % of people who choose 9mm for a carry piece do so because they favor capacity over bore diameter. As fine a pistol as the P7 is, even the M13 has at least 2 fewer rounds on tap than the current crop of self-defense pistols. It's price tag compared to most competing pistols didn't help its future either. Despite all this, I love its ergos, its unique design, low slide mass b/c of the gas piston delay system, low bore axis, narrow, snag-free width, polygonal rifling, accuracy, and proven reliability.

People have different thinking on this I'm sure, but I'd be using the R9 as a carry piece and IMO, based on most of the incidents I've read about or seen, these violent encounters happen at close range, they happen extremely quickly, and they are usually over within a couple of seconds.
So I feel good about getting an R9. It doesn't prepare me for every scenario under the sun but I feel it covers most of them.
It's a carry weapon, I'm not going to be using it to deal with home invaders (#1 Buck for that)
I'm not expecting to use it for zombiepocolypse (not even going to go there)
I think it's a great little pistol.

Agree, Count.
A pistol... any pistol, is a compromise. It's a last resort, "within spitting distance" weapon. If a self-defense scenario is anything but up close and personal, then you'll likely have a very difficult time explaining in court why you felt justified in using deadly force in the first place. I've often heard a pistol's purpose is to help you fight your way to a rifle or shotgun. The only reason to ever choose any pistol over a rifle or shotgun to defend your life is because you can't carry the latter with you everywhere you go. Even if you don't use the R9 as your primary carry weapon, its small size means there's very little disadvantage to carrying it with you anyway in a backup role, especially since most pairs of pants have pockets, and the R9 is an infinitely better weapon than a set of car keys.
-
Attach your keys to your R9. Then you have a "ghetto-flail" of sorts once ammo runs out.
-
Haha! Good idea, Ghost Chili! ;D

There was a case here in Chicago where a 14 year old girl was robbing a couple, and she started pistol whipping the woman and the gun "accidentally" went off.
Fortunately the bullet didn't stirike anyone
One set of people use the pistol as a bludgeon first, another set of people use the pistol as a bludgeon as a last resort.
-
14 years old robber.... And Illinois still doesn't allow people to have CCW... If I ever was to use my gun as a bludgeon, I would make a nunchuck-gun like this example. Although, I would prefer to skip the tape and utilize a rail or something stronger.
