Title: Love it!
Post by: scottryana on February 19, 2011, 10:35:33 PM
Well I decided that I wanted a gun a little smaller then my HK P2000SK, and after lots of reading and going back and forth between Rohrbaugh R9S and the Kahr PM9, I decided that the Rohrbaugh was the right gun.

The size craftsmanship and pride of ownership sold me.  I tried to haggle at the gun shop but they were quite firm, so all said and done it was $1351 after the 8.125% tax, damn Texas!

Brought the little gun home, broke it down, cleaned and lubed it up with some Hoppes Elite.  I went through my ammo and the only non +p 9mm ammo I had was Speer Lawman 115 and 124 grain.

I know that the Gold Dots and the Winchester are the preferred ammo, but until I get an order put together with Natchez these will have to do.

Packed up the range bag, with a box of 115's and a box of 124's.  Fingers crossed that I don't get jams......  Also grabbed my new 7mm Rem Mag, and all the cleaning material to start the pain in the ass job of breaking in the barrel with it.

Well I got to the range and all of the talk of jams, heavy kick, inconstancy, and wear crept into my head as I ran the target out to 4 yards.  Loaded up a mag with 115's, pulled back the slide and pointed the gun, tiny little grip, but still felt great in my hand, squeezed off the first round and immediately the ideas of crazy kick went away!  This gun was fun!  The sights fell right onto target and it was very easy to just point and shoot!

I easily shot all 6 in a 4" circle and then loaded up the 124's and did it again.  I shot 4 mags at 4 yards and then went to 7.  I had the exact same experience at 7 yards, I played with shooting both hands, strong hand and weak hand and the gun worked flawlessly and kept everything in nice and tight.

I had 20 more rounds so I took the target out to 10 yards, really all the further I think I would ever need this gun since it is a backup.  I started to notice that the slide was getting a little gritty, but nothing bad, just not silky smooth.  At this point I am in love with the little gun.

I fired the rest of the 20 rounds and all but 2 of them stayed in the head of the target at 10 yards.  I knew that 100 rounds was plenty for this little gun, but it shot them all perfectly and I couldn't ask for more!

Cleaning it tonight I did notice that the frame finish was worn through and shiny in a couple of spots and the grittiness I felt in the slide was tiny little aluminum shavings, from the much softer frame wearing/clearancing against the stainless slide.  I am a little torn between the oil/grease ideas, I think a light grease would provide more protection against wear, but would also attract more dust, lint, dirt etc.  What are the majority of you guys that have a lot of rounds on your little guns been using?

Oh and lastly after 100 rounds I did compare the recoil spring and it is noticeably shorter, so I guess I will get a few of them ordered.

Thanks for the great resource and I really look forward to some more time with R54xx

Oh and is anyone using a good ankle holster or high belly band?

Ryan,
Welcome to the group and congratulations on getting the pup.
I have no ankle holster or belly band experience, pocket carry and OWB, don't wear pants enough to pay for an ankle holster.;D
I use have been using Eezox for lubing my pup as are several other members.

Ryan - reading your post made me think I was seeing my alter-ego - except my 7mm MAG is pretty well broken in by now; my P2000SK is on my hip way more often than not.

The frame finish wear seems pretty normal on a new R9 - it's discussed here:

http://www.acbsystems.com/boards/rohrbaugh/basefile/frame-wear.htm

and I saw this after the first range session. It seems to be self-limiting as discussed in that link - at least that's what I've seen on my R9. I've used Gun Butter for lube and while I saw some small brass (not aluminum) flakes after the first range session (factory lube) subsequent range sessions have not produced any more. I consider this pretty normal, and I was expecting it as I had read extensively about the pup before I ever owned one.

I shot 115gr MagTech and 115gr Gold Dots initially, now using 115gr WWB for practice ammo and Gold Dots for carry ammo. Mine really likes the Gold Dots and is very accurate with them - but it's very accurate with anything I've shot in it, and very accurate for all who have shot mine.

An R9 makes a very nice companion piece to a P2000SK either in a back-up role or as an easy-to-carry and easy-to-conceal alternative for times when a bigger gun seems too big.

I use eezox and a little BF CLP after the eezox dries. Don't worry about the slight frame wear. It will stop after the firearm is shot a few times at the range.  Enjoy!!

Shoot it and enjoy it. Clean it. Lube it. It will be around longer than you. :o

My HK2000SK is on my hip and the R9S is in my waist band and the SIG 238 is on my ankle.  If I really have to go into "bad" areas my Glock 36 is in my shoulder holster as well. Just to make sure I get home in one piece.

That is a lot of "carry."

Ryan

I am glad you had a positive first experience. I have never used an ankle holster, just pocket holsters. Good luck with your new r9.

Yeah I think if I had to carry like you I would really second guess where if I had to be in that neighborhood. lol

Ryan,

Welcome, and thanks for the range report. Always good to hear from another happy shooter. Like you, my first trip to the range was filled with concerns which quickly went away.

The Rohrbaugh website sells the Apache ankle holster. I have one and like it, tho I usually pocket carry.

For practice ammo I used to use 115gr WWB. The last box had a few rounds that required more than one trigger pull to go off, so I tried 115gr American Eagle FMJ. Worked fine and was quite a bit cleaner than the WWB was. Now using 115 gr Speer Lawman and really like them. As you probably know, they are designed to be practice ammo that replicates the performance of the corresponding duty ammo, in this case 115gr  GDHPs, which are what I carry.
