I'm a newbee to the forum.
This coming week I will take the decision to purchase a R9 or not.
All that I have read makes me ready to jump in except I am a little concerned about the recoil of such a small pistol in 9mm. I have fired a lightweight Keltec 9mm PF-9 and although the recoil was severe, it was not un-manageable.
Anyone have experience with these two ?
I currently pack a Sig-P238 and a Seecamp 32 and I am just curious how this piece stacks up against something I know already.
Great forum --- seems like great folks...
Glad to be here......THANKS
-
I have fired a P-F9 and the felt recoil is similar to the R9, not unmanageable at all. We're glad you're here, too.
-
I've got a LWS32 and the R9. Recoil is sharp on the trigger finger with both, but you live with it. They aren't range guns built for comfortable shooting of 1000's of rounds. They are reliable, functional, and small enough to be with you more than sitting at home with your 1911 or Glock 17 range guns.
If you want a moderately comfortable shooting experience in a smallish 9mm, get the Kahr PM9. I can shoot it as much as I want with no discomfort, but it's still not a target gun.
Welcome to the forum!
-
The Kahr PM9 is a fine pocket pistol but it does weigh 3 ounces more than the R9. It all depends on your priorities but I prefer the lighter weight.
-
The recoil is not bad at all and is often exaggerated IMO. The webbing of my hand gets a little sore after a range session, but that is really it when it comes to discomfort. The webbing of my hand also gets sore with my Seecamp .32 and .380. I don't have any trigger finger problems either. The PM9 trigger was too soft for me and the side mag release was not something I wanted for pocket carry.
-
Choo. Welcome to the Forum. I have a Seecamp .32 and the R9. The recoil of the R9 is definitely sharper than the .32 and rightfully so, however, not unmanageable.
Good luck in your decision and again welcome.

Hi choochoo,
As a recent R9 owner, I was also focused on the recoil horror stories everyone told me. Fortunately, the owner of my local range had a used R9 he let me try before I sealed the deal. I'm not a big guy, which is why I was totally surprised by how manageable the recoil was for such a small pistol. My accuracy with the R9 at 18 feet was just as good as with my HK P2000SK. However, I did notice my arm was shaking a bit after 30 rounds.
I was also considering a PM9, and I agree with FloridaCCW: the PM9 trigger was just way too soft for me.
Cheers,
Steve

Welcome to the forum choochoo.
I have nerve damage in my hands which causes weaknesss as well.
I am not a big man, I'm more of a medium frame.
I have an R9 and PF9 both of which I shoot.
I find the recoil similar and not rough at all, quite manageable for me whom is at a disadvantage.
Don't get hung up on stories of what other people "heard".
It's no big deal
Good Luck
and
Good Shooting

Choo, I have two R9s and a Seecamp .32, I would much rather shoot the R9. Recoil is less and somehow feels "softer" if that makes any sense, more like a "push" than the slam that I get when I shoot the Seecamp. I hope this helps and I wish I could explain it better. And please be welcome to the best forum anywhere. Let us know what you decide. If you decide on the R9 then I would suggest that you contact Tom Watson (The Irish Guard) he makes things easier. Again, welcome. Glad to have you with us. Gene

Yes, SECOND TOM WATSON, he helps sponsor this forum and we should support our sponsors!
-
Choochoo:
Welcome aboard! ;D
With the caveat that felt recoil is highly subjective, I think you will find the R9's recoil to be entirely manageable. Being a dual-spring, locked-breech design, the R9's mechanism absorbs much of the recoil force. I find it to be about the same as that of a straight-blowback .380 ACP, such as the NAA Guardian.
And I second recommendation of Tom Watson by Gene and Reinz.
-
Choo. Definitely will third the recommendation for Tom Watson of the Irish Guard here on the Forum. Should you decide on the R9, give him a hollar; you'll be glad you did.
-
Hi,
In my experience the recoil is Uncomfortable but not unmanigable.
Additionally - i have found different rounds produce different recoil... for example, the Gold Dots have more kick than the Hornady Criticle defense imo.
Either way your good
-
Recoil is substantial but controllable. More interesting is the explosive sound when fired -- I was at the range yesterday where some shooters were firing fully auto Thompsons. When I shot my R9, they came over to me to see what was making such noise. Each was impressed by the R9's fit and finish.
-
Fully auto Thompsons; you got my attention! YES! :) Oh! Now, back to the recoil/kick! ;)
-
Recoil is not in the punishing category like a S&W 340PD with stock grips and full power 357 mag rounds.

-
My two cents--the R9 is very manageable and not at all painful. Not a range gun, for sure, but not a problem at all for its intended use...
-
Choochoo, welcome to the forum, enjoy it. I have alot of customers who have the Seecamp .32 and the R9s, they have told me that if you can manage the .32 the R9s is no problem. I agree with that statment. I would be happy to help you get a R9s, PM me with interest. Tom
-
wll I am in --- I fired about 3 clips thru the little monster and it's a dream --- powerful and crisp but certainly not un-manageable --- quite accurate --- after two clips I was able to place the last clip all in a 2" circle at 7 yards --- totally pleased.
I had one round fail to eject (last one in the clip) (speer golddot-124 GDHP) but other than that, all good
Now after all the recommendations, what exactly can Tom help me with ?
-
Another happy pup owner and a good range report. Congratulations
John

So ChooChoo, your post was not clear to me by your last staement.
Did you already buy a an R9 or did you fire someone else's?
If you have one, Congrats.
if not, contact Tom at the Irish Gaurd.
-
ChooChoo. Congrats and glad you're pleased with the little wonder. Enjoy.
-
I found the recoil on my R9 quite managable, but the muzzle climb is pretty spectacular.

I bought one here locally to void the ffl transfer scheme.
What I was asking is about is Tom,,,,,,,does he just sell the guns or does he do other things to improve it ?
What I really want is a CT laser !
-
No luck so far in getting CT to make one for the Rohrbaugh.

I got my R9 last month (and my CCW today!).
R9 is what it is... small, light, 9mm. And while expensive for a self-defense handgun, I wanted it!
Still, it hurts more than any of my other 15 hand/long guns, and I reload and shoot often.
The Seecamp .32 is just as sharp, but it doesn't hurt. I can shoot it accurately for a couple of mags (using factory ammo, that's not cheap :-[).
My Kahr PM9, shooting the same factory or reload ammo as used in the Rohr R9, is comfortable by comparison; can shoot 5+ mags quite accurately (accuracy surprised me, actually). And the trigger is fine. With practice, can pre-position it when target shooting. But for self-defense practice, I pull all the way through, just like I do with the Seecamp and R9. All three are excellent self-defense triggers, to me.
My R9 shoots even a touch more accurately than the Kahr :D, but (for me) for only one mag. After that, it's only two shots at a time, and then rest or fire something else, before coming back to the R9. It's just painful endurance to continue past two shots, and a waste of ammo because the shots spread way out.
That said, as a self-defense arm, shot up close, and realistically fired once or twice in a real life situation, the R9 is fine.
Been reading this forum for a couple of months. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for your impressions and comparisons, coclimber, and welcome to the forum.
-
coclimber, Welcome to the group and congratulations on the pup and your CC permit.
John
-
coclimber. Welcome to the Forum. Congrats on getting your R9 and thanks for your thoughts.
-
Thank you... tracker, yankee2500, and kjtrains. I've cut-and-pasted lots of your comments and material you've referenced into my P9 folder. It's helped me buy, prep, shoot and maintain my Rohr. Even learned about holsters from here.
You give a lot of your time to we nubees.

And a welcome from me as well, coclimber. (By any chance would you happen to be a rock climber? If so, a double welcome from one who has dangled from a piton or two in his time. 8))
-
Bob,
There seems to be two types of gun owners on most forums
.
(1) Those that have a lot of knowledge and look down on those who do not.
(2) Those who are knowledgeable and are willing to share so others can learn.
We all know which type are on this forum. ;D

"coclimber" is short for Colorado climber. I like doing 14er-peaks (14,000 feet+; 57 in Colorado), but do a touch of "sport" top-rope rock climbing... 5.8 is my limit so far. I'll never attempt "traditional" climbing, though; too old. :P

If I am not mistaken, the North America Wall on El Capitan is classified as a 5.8 climb. That, my new Forum colleague, "ain't too shabby." 8)
Personally, I had to scale back when I lost the first digit of my right ring finger in a bit of "unpleasantness" some years ago. However, I still enjoy taking on a good steep rock now and then, and one of my grandsons is well on his way to becoming a truly serious climber.
Welcome again to the Forum. I think you will find it to be a knowledgeable and collegial group around this campfire.

Gene:
The key to solving that problem is to get in close, don't look down, and maintain a secure hold on whatever is available. ;)
-
Gene. You probably won't have to look down. The veiw is going to be good, for sure!
