Title: Are 147gr loads Okay?
Post by: k_rasmussen on October 08, 2009, 12:58:51 AM
I'm getting over my hurt feelings about the Stealh not having carbon grips and likely will get a R9s shortly.

I have plenty of Ranger T series 147's i'd like to shoot up but haven't seen any refferance here to them being suitable

Be sure this is not +P ammo as this is not to be used in the R9; only standard pressure ammo.

Subject to correction, I believe the 9mm Winchester Ranger T ammunition is a 124-grain +P round. If it is +P, as noted by "kjt," you should not use it in your R9.

As far as 147-grain standard loads, as John has done, I have used them (Remington Golden Sabers) in my R9 without any problems. Increasingly, however, I am leaning toward a 124-grain load, since I often carry a Heckler & Koch P7 as a primary and that pistol's gas-delayed blowback locking system was not designed for a 147-grain round.

Winchester Ranger RA9T is 147 gr standard pressure ammo.  It is also supposedly LEO only, if that concerns you at all.

It is what is presently in my R9S, as it is has proven reliable and very accurate, in addition to being less expensive than the Silvertips.  It is also what I use in my Browning Hi Powers and Glocks.

Gelatin testing from full size guns shows the RA9T performs better, or at least gives the impression based on measured numbers, than Ranger .40 S&W loads.

deercop:

Thank you, Sir, for the correction. I had overlooked that information on the Winchester Ranger RA9T.

With regard to 147-grain 9mm rounds in general, here is a link to a page from Stephen A. Camp's website which I just found and archived for my file:

I have shot most every grain thru my shooter pup,and have had great luck with them all..Except for the +Ps of course..
I have settled on the 115s (GDHP,or STHPs)because I shoot them in my other 9mm pistolas..

I see no problem with doing the 147s if your Pup eats them well!!
