Title: New R9S Stealth
Post by: deercop on May 29, 2009, 08:38:42 PM
Just picked this up today from my local transferring FFL.  Bought it from Arego's, after getting jerked around for a week and a half from Bud's Gun Shop (listed in stock, bought and paid for, took 9 days to let me know "Oops").

Of course I went straight to the range.  Alternated testing Speer GD 115 and Win ST 115.  Fired a total of 50 of the Speers, 18 of the Silvertips.  Only issue was one of the Silvertips took a second hit of the hammer to fire, but this was a box from a pawn shop that he pulled out from under his counter, and the brass was somewhat tarnished.  Anyway, the Speers went w/o a hitch, and they are (and were) my intented carry load, provided the gun liked them, which it did.  I wasn't really working on groups, but I would guess that a half-hearted attempt at one yielded around 3" from 15 yards, certainly more than required.

Already got leather gear in route from Kramer, Hidden Holsters, and Thad Rybka.  After cleaning it, I think I might also need to invest in one of the RJ tools.  ;D

Deercop:

Welcome to the forum and thank you for the report. If you follow some prior strings you will find that some of us are dedicated to the 147 grain bullet, in which I include myself.

For me this was easy as I have not been able to find ST or GD, in any bullet weight, and a senior member of this forum gave me the idea to try Golden Sabre, which work great in my Stealth.

Welcome to the Forum, and thank you for that excellent range report and the photographs!

Along with ACP, I am one of that minority group of owners who favor the 147-grain Remington Golden Sabers in my R9. There aren't too many of us around. The generally recommended loads are the Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Silver Tips which you have selected.

Again, welcome, and good luck with your new masterpiece.

ACP and Richard S,

Do you have any experience with the Gold Dot 147 gr.?  I'm quite partial to Gold Dots, as I have a source that is still relatively well stocked, with 50-round boxes for less than $30.

Heck, they did have 50-round boxes of .380 Gold Dot for $34, but my LWS380's gotta eat too.

Negative for me with GD 147 grain. I have only used (and found) Golden Saber and Hornady TAP 147 grain, either of which I endorse.

deercop:

I have run a lot of 147-grain Remington Golden Sabers through my R9 No. 132 and use them as my current carry load but I have not used a 147-grain Gold Dot. I've tried a lot of other loads, however. I'm not one of those who names his guns, but if I were, No. 132 might be named "Mikey" -- from the old cereal commercial: "Let's give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything."

If you have a supply of Gold Dots in any weight available I would grab them in a heart beat if I were you. This ammo situation isn't going to get any better any time soon, I fear.

Good luck, and stay safe.

Fired my department's BUG course with the R9S today.  25 rounds total, 5 standing from 15 yards, 10 kneeling from 7 yards, and 10 lying on your back at 5 yards.  Scoring target was the "Q-target".  Score was 100%, and was the tightest group of any BUG.

Excellent! Always glad to hear good news about the R9 but your circumstances are "on the job" and particularly gratifying to read. May you never have to use it but, if you do, shoot straight and go home safely.

100% and the tightest group! Congratulations!! Or as one of my old Air Defense Artillery friends might say, "Holy Oozlefinch, Batman!"

The Oozlefinch is indeed a strange and mysterious bird -- due, perhaps, to frequent exposure to missile fuel.   ;)

Correct; but I never grow tired of "dissing" my native state in which CCW does not exist. I escaped to northern New England 3 years ago, FINALLY got to find out what is meant by concealed carry and am now legally entitled to carry in 21 states.

In fairness to NJ, two other vehemently anti-gun states (Illinois and New York) are giving NJ a run for its money as to political corruption.

Had some relatives that lived there; an aunt, uncle, and 2 first cousins.  Heard some of their experiences while living there for 30 years.
Title: Re: New R9S Stealth
Post by: ACP on June 05, 2009, 05:29:40 PM
Hearing about experiences in NJ is far preferable to living through it for 30 years, which is what I did.

I will never again live in a state that prohibits legal carry. Uh uh. I would rather eat oozlefinch raw.

Title: Re: New R9S Stealth
Post by: deercop on June 14, 2009, 06:33:22 PM
I went to the range amidst showers, and shot the heck out of my Stealth.

50 rounds Speer Gold Dot 115 gr
30 rounds Speer Gold Dot 147 gr
12 rounds Federal Hi Shok 115 gr
36 rounds Winchester Silvertip 115 gr

With the exception of 6 rounds I let a guy at the range shoot, I shot them all myself.  No discomfort today, barely any hand tremble when I got done.

It absolutely loves Speer Gold Dot.  It absolutely despises the Federal (no surprise, others have said the same).  It does so-so with the Silvertip.  No failure to feed or eject, only problems were having to pull the trigger twice on the Federals.

Of course I had to flub it up, I had a spectacular group going from 15 yards with 147 Gold Dots, did 18 rounds, of course the 18th round was what happened there?

I think it was the angle of the picture and lighting.  I could be wrong!

That makes sense. I just got through posting a comment, on a different string, regarding this same matter.

I am NOT a fan of G10. However, for whatever reason, Corey's grips look great while deercop's grips look like, uh..., G10!

deercop.

Would you take a different picture at an angle so light reflects off of the grips?  Don't want to put you on the spot, but that might help with seeing if there's a difference in grips from one set to the next.  Thanks!

The grips are G10, and they look like G10 to me, no matter what angle.  Perhaps if I put oil on them or something they might be shinier, but I don't really see the need.  I'll try and take another pic.

Still look the same to me.  FWIW, I don't have a problem with their looks, and they do feel better to me.

Thank you deercop. The Hogue grips are definitely better than stock grips even though they are G10. Also, the angle is better in subsequent photographs.

No dispute about G10's durability. However, texture and looks are poor, in my view. You don't have to tell me that a bad guy won't care any more than you will if the grips serve you well in a real world situation.

Thank you, Tracker. I also understand that the NRA Museum uses Renaissance Wax to help preserve its firearms collection. I figured that if it were good enough for the NRA Museum, the Smithsonian, and the British Museum, it would probably be good enough for my own collection -- especially my R9.   ;)

Thank you for the post regarding Renaissance Wax. That stuff is fabulous. I have never used it on a firearm. However, as a custom knife collector I am familiar with the product.

Just smelling that stuff makes me happy. Do I neeed rehab?

;D  I know what you mean. Now . . . if this group could somehow design, produce, and market an alcohol-based product having the aroma combination of Renaissance Wax, Brasso, Ballistol, gunpowder, and jet fuel, we might just have the ultimate after shave lotion and all get rich.  ;)
