??? ??? ???
Hello all...
I went to the range for the first time today with my new stelth and fired approximately 30 rounds. I took the gun apart later to clean and was a bit surprised to see aluminum shavings and specks on the inside of the frame where the barrel meets it and locks into place. Is this typical for the break in of a new r9 to seat itself this way? Any info would be appreciated...The ammo used was approx 15 rounds of Atlanta Arms 115g reloads and 15 rounds of Gold Dot 115g. The reloads failed to chamber twice as the previous rounds were not extracted and the gold dots were flawless.

It's not uncommon for there to be some seating wear. It will stop shortly and should never be an issue other than knowing it happened. Welcome to the forum and the R9!!!
-
Welcome to the Forum, right_to_bear_arms! #1. Don't use reloads at all. Gold Dots should be fine. Clean it up and try it again with proven ammo on this Forum! Congratulations on getting the Stealth. :) :)

Thanks for the knowledge guys. The gun is awsome but the wear on the frame first time out concerned me. I cleaned it well and will only use gold dots or silver tips when I can actually find some to purchase.

Winchester 115gr JHPs "Winchester White Box" works great for target practice as well. It's still not TOO bad to locate, and while the prices have gone up it's sill a bargain compared to the suggested JHP defensive rounds.

Welcome to the forum. I got my new Stealth last week and just fired it.
I strongly recommend not using reloads. I cannot find the Winchester or Gold Dot ammo but I am a new fan of the 147 grain bullet, posted on another string in this forum.
Hornady TAP and Golden Sabre 147 grain, though expensive, both work great in my Stealth.
-
I have looked for the Winchester White Box everywhere and can't find it. I'm now looking for the Remington 147 grain Golden Sabres per ACP and Richard.
-
Golden Sabre is great but don't overlook Hornady TAP 147 grain if you can find it. Hornady is $1.00 a round but worth it until this ammo shortage retreats or supply catches up with demand.
-
I've got a box of Hornady Critical Defense, but haven't tried them yet. Will look for the Hornady TAP as well.
-
Hornady TAP caption reads "for personal defense" on the box. I really don't know the difference between "critical" and "personal" defense. What I do know is that the 147 grain bullet rocks, as they should for $25.00 a box for 25 cartridges.
Golden Sabre cost me $36.00 a box of 50 and dealer would only sell me two boxes.
Gun people are the most courteous people of good will I have ever met in my life, despite the way we are characterized by Second Amendment enemies. The ironic benefit of this ammo shortage is that I have done more posting on this forum and met some really great people in my quest for ammo.
This is a good thing!

welcome to the forum, congrats on getting the Stealth. It now is a hunt for good ammo. Tom

The critical defense round is primarily defined by a polymer tip
that fills the hollow point cavity. This is designed to enhance
consistency in expansion, especially through clothing where thread
and fibers interfere with consistent expansion.
Critical Defense ammo eliminates clogging with the use of their
patented Flex Tip bullet. Upon entering soft tissue, the tip swells
and imparts equal pressure across the entire circumference of the
bullet cavity.
I saw a "you tube" demo of .380 critical defense ammo from Steve
Hornady and an associate. The penetration and expansion in gelatin
was very impressive.

now if one could find them ;) Tom

I picked up a box of the critical defense ammo back in Feb. when I was in Florida, they work fine in my R9s. That is what I have been carring.

Thank you Tracker for the post. Critical Defense ammo has been out for a while if I am correct in placing it in Glaser category. That stuff was big dollars years ago. God only knows what it costs now.
Also, happy about the Hornady .380 info. Teaching an old dog new tricks is a good thing.
-
ACP,
Critical Defense was new last year, as I recall, and was an evolution
of the LEVERevolution cartridge that redefined the effective range
of the 30-30. According to their website the muzzle velocity of the
9mm is 1140 fps and the .380 is 1000 fps.
Retail price is also about $1 per round.

right_to_bear_arms:
Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on your R9.
I, too, would advise you to avoid reloads and stay with premium commercial ammunition. Just don't load +P or +P+ ammo in the R9.
As for the initial break-in wear, that is normal. The material at this link may be of interest:

Good luck with your new masterpiece of form and function.

I will take the Hornady Critical Defense round at a $1.00 a round. The glaser round was $2 or $3.00 per round. Finding any of this stuff is a different matter.
