Title: Hogue grips on Rohrbaugh website
Post by: HankHill on December 15, 2008, 12:39:07 AM
Well I just picked up my new R9S and all I can say is this the best little pistol I have ever seen!!!
I couldn’t wait to get out to the range and test it out, where I was even more impressed.  I fired 100 rounds of WWB 115 without a hiccup. I fired two handed the first 88 then one handed the last 12. This will be my carry gun of choice as soon as I put another 150 rounds or so through it.

I will be contacting a smith soon about having the front and rear strap checkered or dragon scaled to make it a little easier to hold on to.  I ordered the Hogue slip on grip in the mean time.
Has anyone ordered the Hogue grips from Rohrbaugh’s website? They look like they will offer a better grip but looks can be deceiving .

Thanks
Hank

I tried the Hogue grips but went back to 3M tape on the sides
and front and back straps, which suits me well. This combo
plus the IDM mag extension improves the grip considerably.

We should start a poll on how many of us are waiting for IDM mag extenders.  I am waiting to order two as soon as they are available...

I really, really want two of the hooked black mag extensions.

I wish that IDM would start up making them again.

Got an email from Bryce on 12-10-08. He hopes to have the grip extensions available again around the first of the year.

That will be a happy new year !

The hogue G10 Grips available in the Company Store - are they thicker than the originals ?   How do they compare to IDM grips ?

I just did a search on this site for previous discussions on the Hogue grips and can't find any.  Is this a new product?  How about some more feedback on their use?

My hands do have a problem with the size of my pup and, as I have posted before, I'm anxious to get some curved mag extenders.

But back on the Hogue grips: If it's a better design, why wouldn't Rohrbaugh use it?

And just a sidebar, I'm going to ask about the pocket slipper laser light in another thread...

The Hogue grips are fine if they suit you; the one thing i noticed is
that, initially, they fit so tight that the magazine was more difficult
to release. Also, I just did not need the extra real estate of those
grips--the simpler, the better, IMO.

Tracker, I am a bit slow - what do you mean by real estate - size, price or fit ?

Sorry for the confusion, thanks

Just extra stuff on the grip; sorry I wasn't more specific.

Does that "extra stuff" include checkering?

After seeing this thread I looked at the Rohrbaugh website.  Unfortunately, the grip picture is a bit murky on my computer and I can't tell if it is showing checkering or just some patterning.

Also, are the Hogue grips any real difference in size?

Thanks,

Bill

This is something that is very subjective and you just have to try
out different options: please refer to my post on 12/14 above that
describes what works for me. There have been some beautiful
examples of custom checkering and other external features that are
very impressive. I just prefer the 3M tape and the "hook-em" from
IDM.

I can and will highly recomend the IDM alum. checkered grips.  They grip  VERY, VERY good!  I own and have tried the orginal CF's, orginal G10's, Rohrbaugh's alum. grips, IDM's G10 grips and IDM's Alum. grips.  The Rohrbaugh alum. grips are good but the IDM ones have the best hold and are thinner to boot.  I know some don't like fooling with a gun as nice as the R9 is straight out of the box but checkering the front and rear back straps makes a world of difference too.  Mine sticks in my hand like glue.

Corey,
Do you have any velocity comparison data on the ported barrel
vs. the standard barrel yet?

I think Tracker is talking about the Hogue Handall Jr. slip-on sleeve that some have tried on this gun.  I'm not sure any of us have tried the brand new Hogue option from the Rohrbaugh website yet.  They look very similar to the stock grips with checkering on the bottom half of the grip.  I don't know what they are made out of.

If someone has tried those grips, please post your experience.

Thanks for clarifying.  I guess that's why my question was ignored.

If it truly is checkering on the bottom half (I post that because on my computer that part is so fuzzy I just can't tell), it's a very interesting option.

The website says that the Hogue grips are G10 (a composite material) which I find a whole lot more attractive than aluminum as a grip material and is less than one-half the price if competing offerings.  The checkering (if it is checkering) also covers more of the grip surface which I like, as well.

I'll probably be calling them after the holidays to confirm the checkering.  If true, I'll be getting some and post a review here.

I'm not making any value judgment, but G10 is just fiberglass.  We use it a lot where I work.  It's machineable and reliable.  Google "G10 fiberglass" and you'll get an idea what it is and what it costs.

Thanks for the comment ; you are right about the slip-on sleeve
confusion.

I think that you're pretty much correct, in concept.  Probably the only distinction is that from what I've read G10 uses paper or linen rather than glass fiber as the substrate for the resin build-up.

Everyone has their own preference, but for me the G10 has a much better "feel" than aluminum -- especially here in Houston where a "dry" day is 60-70% humidity.

I didn't bother to search for G10, but don't suspect that it's very expensive -- certainly no more so than aluminum, proably less.  The expense comes in writing/debugging a CNC program and the actual machine time to make them with any precision, as well as the seller's decision on how to amortize the programming investment.

Usually, when people reference 3M tape for gun grips they're talking about 3M's anti-skid tape.  You can generally find it in hardware stores in prepackaged rolls or (in old-fashioned mom and pop shops) huge rolls which are cut off at on-demand lengths.

They have two varieties.  The black stuff is sort of like a coarse sandpaper or skateboard tape.  The gray stuff (usually harder to find) is more rubbery -- a little closer to Hogue grips in tape form.

Another option is Pac-Skin in roll form.  It's like the Pachmayr grips in sheet form.  Most of the gun-type internet big box stores (Midway, Natchez, etc.) carry it.

The gray 3M or Pachmayr stuff are a little easier on your hands, especially if you're not regularly doing manual labor to toughen them.

I like the black 3M tape but have discovered that it can be
softened as you like it by rubbing it with another piece of
the same tape or sandpaper. This takes off the roughness
and makes it quite pleasant to use on the grips.
