Title: New to forum
Post by: OCD on November 09, 2007, 08:33:06 PM
Just posting to say Hi. Picked up my R9S Stealth this evening. Must say very impressed with the overall workmanship, weight and just plain looks great!

Couple of questions. I have read through most of the FAQs
Why in the world does the owners manual say to use channel locks on the recoil spring?! Seems very archaic for such a fine pistol. I just put it back with my fingers.
Anyone have a picture of the tool RJ made?

Are Gold Dots pretty much the recommended carry ammo?
From what I have read, any good non P ammo is OK for breaking in and range work? WWB, MagTech, UMC FMC?
Thanks, and hope I get to go to the range this weekend! :)

OCD,

Does OCD stand for obsessive compulsive disorder?

The reason I ask is that we just had a poster with a three letter handle delete a bunch of his posts.

Any NON +P ammo is OK if it functions in your gun.
Carry ammo is recomended as Gold Dots or Silvertips.  One of the R brothers(manufacturers) carries Silvertips.  I recomend brass caseed only.  No CCI or Wolf or anything like that.

Mike: Heh!

OCD: Welcome to the forum from another newbie member. I joined in a few weeks ago. The folks here are real good people. The only ones who arent (so far) have packed up and left in the dark of night. Glad to have you here.

Welcome OCD,
I would recommend that you do not use channel locks for
the reasons you mentioned. There have been several more
sophisticated tools developed since then by contributors
to this site. I don't recall the links but I'm sure someone
can help us out on this one.

Thanks. No I was able to put her back together without pliers or vise grips. ;)

Yes, OCD is Obsessive Compulsive Behavior (not a true clinical case, just for guns ;D)

The manual also says replace the recoil spring every 100 rds? I thought that had changed to something like 250 or so??

Your monicker might be OCB, then, not OCD. I don't consider
"obsessive compulsive" about guns a disorder. Cheers!

OCD:

Welcome to the forum! All of us around this campfire tend to be a little obsessive/compulsive about our R9s. You should fit right in.   ;)

As for the "two-in-one" takedown tool which RJ developed, I have this photograph in my Photobucket album which shows it along with some other "widgets" I've collected for the care and maintenance of my R9:

I believe that RJ has sold all of the takedown tools which he had made and doesn't plan to make any more. You might want to watch the Forum's "Classified" section. They sometimes show up there.

Steve Bdair no longer offers the tools he developed for the reasons discussed in this thread:

Hi,
I'm a newbie as well and enjoy the site.  Picked up my R-9s yesterday and put 150 rounds through it, mostly S&B 115g FMJ (standard pressure), which seemed pretty hot (I've got a bit of swelling of the trigger finger and web this morning!) along with Hornady and Federal 115g JHP standard pressure (both seemed less "hot" than the S&B). I had a few failure to fires which seemed to be due to hard primers or perhaps limp wristing due to hand fatigue toward the end of the session.  A second pull of the trigger successfully fired them, however.  I guess I should be changing out the recoil spring at this point as well...

Are there any available tools for reassembly?  I noticed that both of the ones previously available are no longer.  Any other hints?

Thanks in advance,
Ron

Ron:

And a welcome from me as well!

As for your having run 150 rounds through the R9 at one outing, the most I've cared to tolerate in a single session is about half that number. In the words of Rudyard Kipling:  "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!"  8)

Richard,
Well, it was definitely uncomfortable toward the last 50 rounds or so.  Next time, I'll bring a glove.
Thanks,
Ron

Richard, Thank you for the photo! That is what I was looking for. I will try to fabricate something like the two way tool just to make things a little easier. I was able to field strip just using my "vise grip" fingers ;D

Is the new recommended spring change now at 200 or so rounds?

Thank you

OCD:

The current owner's manual on the Rohrbaugh web site still recommends "periodic replacement of the recoil spring after each 100 (one hundred) rounds fired." The springs are not expensive -- only $4.99 plus S&H from the Rohrbaugh Store:

Richard,

I just ordered new springs from Maria who indicated 200 - 250 rounds between spring replacements.  I noticed at least a 1/4" reduction in size on the spring I replaced after firing 175 rounds on my first outing with the new R-9s.

Just my $.02.

Anything Maria says, I take as gospel. Henceforth, 200-250 it shall be.   8)

Well went to the outside range today. The weather was great but due to the Holiday and all the "snow birds" are down the range was pretty crowded. Kinda hard to concentrate when folks are firing big bore magnums or seeing how much ammo they can waste going rapid fire. ::)

Anyway, I shot 100 rounds combined of WWB, Mag Tech  FMC and Rem UMC JHP which I had.

No failures except 2 of the Rem JHP would not chamber the first round, re racked the slide and then fine.

Also, on maybe 3 or 4 occasions, the mag dropped out as the magazine release was not clipped in the little notch. After the first time I made sure it was locked in there but it still happened a few times? I can not figure out why? If the bottom of my hand was contacting it I would think it would push it forward not back to release?? Very strange. This happen to anyone else?

Overall, very impressed with this pistol. :)

Thanks for the range report. I and many others here have had great luck with WWB, and I've even decided that's going to be my carry ammo too, as It just seems to have no troubles, and some of the other stuff does. After what I saw it do (passing completely thru 3/4 plywood like it was paper -and then slicing tangentally thru a 6" live alder tree behind the backstop  - at 10 yards) I'm convinced this ammo is well suited to putting down a bad guy if any of my shots hits home in a showdown.

I too had my mag drop out once on me in my first range session, with no more troubles after that. I'm not sure what caused it, but I think it's just something to be aware of and it wont happen much if at all.....Kind like how you dont bite your tongue because you know its there....most of the time.

Thank you also. Good to be here. Just took it apart again and applied a little loc tite to the grip screws. They were loose after one range use of around 100 rds.

One must be careful doing so,as they are easy to bugger up getting out as it is..

I would lean towards just tightening after shooting..

May be a moot point now though..

Not a problem, I have a impact wrench. ;)

I put just a pin drop of blue on each screw and have a good set of allen wrenches. I say that now, will let you know if and when I try and take them out. :o

You are probably right.

Range Report: another 100 rounds (WWB) through the "pup" without a single failure.  Question: has anyone been able to remove the firing pin for more detailed cleaning?  The FP block doesn't seem to drop out the way 1911s and others do.
Thanks,
Ron
