Title: R-9 Elite (first photos)
Post by: DDGator on August 21, 2007, 08:44:31 PM
Hello all,

As I mentioned in another thread, Karl and Eric Rohrbaugh honored me with the second R-9 Elite to leave the factory. (The first went to Roy Huntington at American Handgunner.)

The light was fading, but I managed to snap a few decent photos.

Readers of CCM may recognize my oak tree...   ;)

And my proof...  ;D

This gun is very sweet.  The finish reminds me of one that Kimber did for a while -- the eclipse or something like that.  Very handsome in person.  It has a very different appearance depending upon the lighting.

Fit and finish are perfect.  Trigger is smooth.  This will shoot like a dream, I am sure.  Won't know until this weekend.

Thanks Karl and Eric -- I will conceal it proudly! :)

That is truly one beautiful work of functional art!  Congratulations!

Wow!  :o It must be beautiful up close. I would certainly think about putting it behind glass when you share it with others folk that might appreciate a true work of art. I would hate to allow any stray drool to get on it. Your are a lucky man!

Are they taking orders? I am sold!

Thanks!  Yes, I am sure they will take your order!  Tell them you heard about it here... I think this is the only place to hear about it so far.

I don't "collect" guns, so this one will be shot and carried.  I already have my order in to Kevin at K&D for a Pocket Defender with stingray trim...   ;D

Although I have a FEW guns, I am not sure my wife would agree with that assesment, I would not consider myself a collector. I am pretty selective as far as what I purchase and am pretty sure if I sold what I have I would certainly come out in the black. Mine will also be a carry piece, I may have to limit those times to formal occasions however ;). I do believe if you have a ferrari, it should be driven and not kept in the garage. This is a beautiful utilitarian tool, just like that ferrari.
I will give them a call tomorrow? And speak to Maria is it?
Thanks for sharing!

Yep, Maria is the one to talk to.  She usually answers the phone up there.

Phsimone:

Permit me to welcome you to the Forum and to compliment you on your obviously superb taste in handguns. Please post photographs if you purchase one of the Elite R9s.

As for the Ferrari, there's a stunning 2003 ENZO F1 on the block over at eBay Motors which makes me wish I had purchased MicroSoft stock when it first hit the street:

I hate to admit it, but I was thinking about picking up a Seecamp 380.  But after seeing that Elite.........Wow.    I mean I want something that looks good to protect me.

Time to keep saving......

Very nice piece and congrats on Luck number 2.

Got to the range today.  Not much of a range report...

I shoot each month with a group of good shooters to practice skills learned in classes.  I didn't have a lot of time, but me and two other shooters ran 4 mags through the pup on the plate rack.

The Elite shoots very well and functioned great.  Some shots were coming in high (at 15 yards), but with a litte bit of experimentation, plates at 15 yards were quite doable.

And, this was running crappy WWB ammo.  Will do some more testing with premium carry ammo soon.

I've read that the work on the slide is done by hand. How do you guys think it was done? I might try it on my stealth. It really changes the look. Beautiful!

At $2245 for the elite model, exactly what are you getting above and beyond the standard R9? Is it mostly cosmetic? If so then I'm not really interested.
Or is there quite a bit more internal work done, like polishing and hand fitting to improve the function of the gun? If so, I'm a little miffed because I was under the impression that there was already a high degree of polishing and hand fitting done on the standard R9. Maybe I was wrong about that.
I fully understand the need to recoup their investment and to become profitable. Without that, Rohrbaugh can't stay in business. But I'm just not sure the new Elite models make much sense for the majority of people out there. Seems like just an easy way to capture a few more customers and some easy profits. Nothing wrong with that really. If that's what it takes, I'm glad they're doing it, but I'm not seeing the value in these guns. Maybe I'm missing something.

Well, first of all -- the $2,245 is for the Elite Premium, which is a very special, very limited edition.  Look at the description for all the extra labor that goes in, plus the carbon fiber grips.  The Premium is, in my opinion, intended as a collector's piece.

The regular Elite is just $200 more than the stealth, which are fitting and polishing time that are mostly cosmetic, but also functional.

I don't hear anyone complaining about the fit and finish of any R-9, so buying the upgrade is hardly necessary--unless its what you want.  All R-9s receive a lot more hand work and fitting that most guns on your dealer's shelf.
