It would be interesting to see which guns you carried before (or after) you bought your R9. For a format, we might use:
Approx. year or length of time, type of gun, reason you switched.
(My thanks to another forum for the topic idea.)

NAA Mini .22 mag. then to the R-9s. The reason is self
explanatory
-
I started with a Beretta Tomcat .32 (which self-destructed but to Beretta's credit they just sent me a new one) then I traded it on a Kahr PM9. Then I got the buying bug and bought a Kel-Tec P3-AT which was my constant companion until I couldn't resist and got an R9, which is now my constant pocket companion!

I started with a Colt Mustang Pocketlite. Then a LEO friend let me try his Glock 27. Had to have It. Next came a NAA mini and the Guardian .32. Next, I tried and discarded two Kel-Tecs. I replaced the two KTs with my beautiful R9s.
I am currently waiting (patiently?) for a Seecamp .380 from The Irish Guard.
What's next? Stay tuned.
-
Wather PPK - 1963-1983
Colt Mustang - 1983-1999
NAA Guardian (.32) - 1999-2001
NAA Guardian (.380) - 2001-2004
Rohrbaugh R9 - 2004-
All as BUG, with a 1911 Government model as primary whenever possible.

Good topic.
What I see here is people, probably more on this forum, like small pocket type pistols.
I started with a Bauer 25acp, while I waited for my Colt Gold Cup to come in. I carried the Gold Cup,with its full size frame and slide and moved onto a Randal Compact, the size of an officers model. Then things started to get smaller after that.
Once I got my first Seecamp LWS-32, I was hooked on small powerful handguns.
I have a wide assortment of handguns, but carry the smallest ones the most.Nowadays "big" for me is my Kimber Ultra Elite, at 24ozs. and a small frame, it is comfortable, reliable, and accurate.
-
In the late 80's I bought a Beretta double action 21A (.25 cal) and an S&W .38 snubby model 649 (Body guard model) with the hump that cover the hammer all in stainless. I carried both of them until my Rohrbaugh purchase. I also just bought a Glock 30 in .45 caliber for carry also. I put the extended magazine release on the Glock along with the pinky extensions on the magazines. The Beretta and the S&W are now retired to the Fort Knox gun safe.
~I just wish I had more time to shoot.
~Happy Holidays to all. Watch out now as the crooks are doing holiday shopping too!

Listed in the order purchased:
PPK/S .380
NAA five-shooter .22mag
S&W Bodyguard .38spl
Kahr K40 .40S&W
Kimber 1911 .45acp (full size & compact)
HK P7 9mm
S&W mod. 60 .357mag w/ lasergrip
R9s
LWS .32
LWS .380
Except for the P7 and the Bodyguard, which I sold, I still rotate through the major caliber pieces for primary carry, with the bugs for backup or when I'm not dressed to conceal well.

Haven't been carrying long, ~3yrs, but started with glock 23 that I still carry when in the field. For office carry I moved to a Sig 232 for a little while but too heavy. Went to a kel-tec p-32 now to a R9s.
-
My office carry went from a NAA Guardian in .32ACP to a Taurus 85CH to the Rohrbaugh R9.
My regular carry started and still remains a third generation Smith & Wesson compact pistol in either 9mm, .40S&W or .45ACP depending on the season and how I am dressed.
Although I might be adding a SIG to that line-up soon :) depends on Santa and my combination Christmas / birthday present. ;)

gr8 - I have moved up I guess in size and weight - well as primary. I am one of those folks who have few prob's over concealment and actually favor large and heavy - more stable platform plus capacity.
My first carry, for quite some time, was Taurus M85 snub. I went up from there to try a semi - and so used P95, mostly in a sho rig. Went back to OWB then and tried M28, BHP and finally for some time went back to revo, with SP-101.
I had tho had the hots for a SIG for ages and finally early this year got me a 226ST - my daily carry now (9mm, 15+1 +P GD's). I can tho sub' this one for a 228 or even a 220 if I want .45acp - they all have CT grips.
Oh and have tried some carry time with SW99 - very compact and actually a good shooter but SIG still wins and I prefer now to stick to one platform.
For me the pup has almost exclusively been BUG category - just very occasionally if needs must it takes primary (and so sole) stage. Great in pocket, not bad at all ankle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry - edit to add - you asked re timeframe. Well I actually started carry 2002. M85 was probably at least 6/12 - P95 maybe three months or so - hard to remember. Others spread about. First pup came may 2004 and second (the carry one) Oct 2004. SIG carry now near 10 months or more.
1981 to Present: HK4 .380
Occasionally: Sig P230
Now: R9
-
S&W 642, then a Kimber Pro Carry II -- now my briefcase gun -- and my R9 in my pocket all the time.
-
I've only been carrying a few years. Started with a NAA Guardian .380, but it was just too heavy and blocky and I didn't like to shoot it. Moved to a Keltec P32 that was a dream to carry (so light!) but I wanted a stronger caliber. The R9 came next as the perfect compromise between weight, size, caliber, and comfort shooting. I still carry the P32 often, but now it is usually in addition to the R9.
I've picked up other guns as well, but I don't carry them much. Airlight .357 on occasion. Para .45 on rare occasions. NAA .22 magnum frequently as a BUG always always when hiking since the first two rounds are snake shot. Glock 17 as my bedside gun. And a few more guns that are just for the range, like my S&W model 10 and Browning Buckmark. But basically, for carry I stick with pocket guns, and the evolution was Guardian, P32, R9.
-
My carry pistol remains a Kobra Carry or lightweight Kimber Ultra.
My backup pistols haven't changed too much starting in the 1970s with a PPK (.380ACP). More recently a NAA Guardian (.32ACP). Beretta Tomcat (.32ACP). I don't yet carry my R9S.
>>Lets see...**think, think, think**...
For Winter carry I started carrying five years ago with a .357 S&W 649-3 Bodyguard with CT Laser Grips. For warm month carry I used a .38 S&W Model #38-2 Airweight with CT Grips. These guns are similar in physical design being 5 shot snub-nosed revos with bobbed hammers only one is stainless, the other alloy. I usually carry in a belly bag or pocket.
In recent years I may switch in Winter to either my Ruger SP 101 in .9mm, or a Glock-30 (.45) or G-26 (9mm) for more rounds and depending on dress. Warm month carry may see the G-26 some more or prehaps one of my .380s...Colt Mustang or Government models, or maybe a Sig Model #232-SL or Walther PPKS.
Then there is the R9 which I tend to carry year round as either primary or BUG to one of the others. Right now I am trying to work a deal for a 9mm Colt Pocket Nine which had a complete makeover by Cylinder & Slide. I can see this fine gun alternating with the R9 or maybe just coming out for special occasions...TW<<
-
I started with 1911 government model, then a commander, then a officers model, PPK, Seecamp .32 and on to the R9s.
The R9s is always with me and a Colt Defender in .45acp for more dangerous areas.
I have been carrying 10 years and have been up and down, depending on the season and where I was going. I evolved as follow:
Sig 230
Sig 229
HK USP Compact similiar to the 229
Kimber 1911 Compact
Glock 27 & 30
Keltec P32
R9S
At the beginning I was looking for more power, then realized I needed light and smaller size without giving up to much..
I still rotate between the 27 and the R9, depending on how I am dressed and where I am going. :)
-
Well, let's start from the beginning!
The 1st gun that I purchased with the little money I had was a cheap Taurus 38sp, during college days, over 23 years ago. Today, I still have it hidden in the wife's closet! I went through the experimental period with different ammo types and guns over the years. And now, I seem to narrow 'em down to just 45ACP and 9mm guns. I seem to like German guns and, of late, got into 1911s. This thing is still evolving and here it is in current form:
Cheers!
Now that is what I would call a top-of-the-line survival kit! 8)
-
All years approximate.
1973-1993 S&W Model 37
1993-2000 Walther PPK/S
2000-2002 Kel-Tec P32
2002-2005 Kel-Tec P3AT
2005-Present Rohrbaugh R9S or Seecamp LWS .32
Note:
If circumstances dictate, I will carry my Ed Brown Kobra Carry or my Glock 36.
-
I've been carrying since around 1990 and my list goes something like this in a somewhat chronological order:
Ruger P89
Glock 19
SIG P228
Colt Officer Model
Glock 26
Glock 22
Glock 27
HK P7M8
Kimber .45
Glock 30
Glock 36
Some plastic Beretta 9 or 40
Kimber Ultra RCP II
Rohrbaugh R9S
Wilson CQB - C
Ed Brown Kobra Carry
HK P2000 SK .40 s&w
Glock 38 .45gap
XD-40 sub compact
I'm probably leaving a few out. I don't still have all of these. Many are gone (regretably). Currently for carry it's the R9S, XD40, G38, P2000 SK, whatever the situation dictates or that I'm in the mood for ;D.
-
What do you think of the XD? I've been thinking of one in 357 Sig -- I've also been thinking of a p226 in 357 sig...
-
Aglifter, I like the XD alot. Feels more natural in the hand compared to a Glock.......and I think I may like the trigger better as well....
In fact I like it so much that I just picked up the new XD 45 ACP. Can't wait to shoot it!
-
I was at the gunshop when the smith's XD 45 sample showed up -- he's not sharing, so I have to wait -- what I really want is the XD 45's frame, but in 357 sig -- just can't bring myself to put a 45 ACP in anything other than my 1911...although I might be convinced -- for some reason the XD 45 is just a small amount bigger, which makes all the difference for me.
My first post to the forum. Glad to be here and read all the good ideas and comments. My first carry was a Colt Officer's Lightweight which was too heavy for all situations. I had a PPK Walther knockoff in 9mm Mak and then went to a Keltec P3AT. All the shooters in my club had FTE problems with the Keltecs. I was sent a new extractor and continued to have problems. I finally solved the problem but was never comfortable with a 380. Got a kahr P40 and loved it but it was a little large. I bought a scandium 357 J frame from S&W and put CT grips on it. It is my primary carry gun to this date, but I call it my hand grenade. Three shots with full power loads and my whole arm is numb. Still it is powerful and very accurate and people tell me that I would never notice recoil in a real battle. Hope I never have to find out. Then I bought a Kahr PM40 and it is all I hoped it would be. Several weeks ago I saw a R9S at the local gun show and drooled. The dealer wanted to deal and asked what I had to trade. I, effectively, traded the P40 and the Keltec P3AT and some boot. My buddy bought my P3AT since he wanted a reliable one after selling two of them. Loaded with ammo, the R9S is about the same as the PM40 in weight, and has better concealability. Both are slightly heavier than the loaded Scandium and do not have CT grips. My R9S fed the first 100 rounds with no hiccups and is my main alternate CCW gun.
Sorry for the length and rambling. I just love to talk guns.
To all of you that responded, thanks, I appreciate it. It is nice to have a place to explore all the issues about a product that I am interested in. I have enjoyed reading the posts so far and am more than glad to share my experiences. I have learned a bunch so far and this is a subject that has no end. No matter how much you experience, there is always something else someone has discovered from another viewpoint. My local gun show buddies and I do this all the time and it is fun to find another group of like-minded people.
