Title: TW's pics - are now video!!!!
Post by: R9SCarry on December 23, 2005, 01:11:59 AM
Wow, what a marathon!!

I selected the main series from TW's pics of Eric doing stuff with R9, sequenced them - and then resized them all down for inclusion in vid, plus other tweaks as needed.

My mic and sound card are doing crazy stuff and so had to find a way round all that to make commentary track - which BTW is not scripted - purely ''ad lib" so do not expect it to be that great!  I had to ''stretch'' exposures of stills quite a bit to make space for adequate commentary and so whole thing (sorry) is 7 darned minutes long!

Then, trying to squish a 1.4 Gb AVI down to something useful - had to employ not one, but three edit programs!!  Sheesh, what fun!  I have yet to find one prog' that does everything just right - so have to ''mix and match''!

So - what do we have?  Well for dial-up I guess smaller file has to be it - tho the image size is smaller than 320x240 unfortunately.  Player window can be stretched just a tad and so hope it works OK for Brenden etc.

Anyone who can tho - download the 8Mb file - which is about as it was meant to be, tho even there compression is pretty fierce!  But no one is gonna want the other next version which is 25Mb !!  Ouch!

Hope anyways it helps by giving an ''Eric'' perspective - and in particular two things stand out - the use of channel locks and - Eric's very effective one hand hold which I now agree is better than my version tho, still needs some hand strength a bit.

The grease quantities shown are IMO a bit generous but that helps show things better - and of course excess would be wiped off at the end anyways.

There ya go - best I can do for now. :)

That's great and a lot of work I know. I use NeroVision a lot for that sort of thing. But the 8 meg url did not work and I would like to get that, even 25 would be no problem for me.
Thanks,
Ken

Ken - thx for looking.  Glad you found that prob - I checked and darned link on Hi-res was suffering syntax error - now corrected.  Do try again.

I could do a 25Mb but doubt most folks would want it and - in fact - the 8Mb is about OK.

Do send me a link if you have it for Nero vision - always looking to gain more tools!

That's some great work.  the 8MB is the one for Broadband..

Only one error,  the phrase at the end, is properly pronounced,  " You DA MAN !"  as originally spoken.   ;D

Chris,

Outstanding!  Thank you so much.  And many thanks to TW for providing these fine pictures.

Would you consider providing the 25 Meg version if it is not much work?

You could easily have made several thousand dollars selling the material to forum members.  You have been very generous.

You are a remarkable man.  My hat is off to you, once again.

Thx for the comments. :)

Well - the 25Mb version is actually still a non-entity - it was just that at some point when compressing down to save I realized one time I was heading for that sort of size or even a bit bigger, but aborted.  I could probably produce it but IMO not much benefit really.

You see, I rezized, tweaked and cropped etc, all pics in the sequence to 320x240 - to avoid losses by having them reduced later within the vid - so no benefit to having a larger format and if less compression the only change then I doubt the perceived benefit a major advantage.

I may see later what I can do - I have a 1.4Gb totally uncompressed original!!!

Great job, thank you! I havent had time to shoot my new r9 yet, but I can believe a lot of the malfunctions and problems related to this pistol are due to the lack of the detailed care, cleaning, and lubing this pistol requires. This might clear up some of those issues.

Thank you Sir for that.  Very well done and quite informative.  I will have to try that one handed grip style out.
Title: Re: TW's pics - are now video!!!!
Post by: R9SCarry on December 23, 2005, 02:56:35 PM
Oh yes - the one handed grip.  Meant to comment further on that.

While my method, per the other videos - works for me I have to say since trying the ''Eric'' hold it does work exceptionally well.  of course it still needs some hand strength but not so much - a lot of extra hold is achieved by virtue of large contact area between thumb and finger along slide.  At least - it should be possible to hold like that for a few seconds at a time and so enough to carry out pin manouvers.

One other thing - my observation - I think Eric's lube quantities were a trifle excessive but helped to show what was going on.  In practice - and up to a point, less is more, and that applies too with oil.

I had some problems a few weeks ago with my SIG 226 - attributable in the end to simply having too much grease on rails - it was thickening with crud build up and slowing the slide operation enough to give feed problems.

That gun I now use only Militeck1 oil on - but of course this is stainless running on stainless.  My preference with R9 is minimalistic lube on rails - and acceptance of doing a more regular cleaning to keep the pup in tip-top condition.

Once again THANK YOU  ;D

I will now attempt to down load the 8Mb file on dial up!! :o

I appreciate you thinking of us that still are without the fast connection!! ;D

Further updates today - I have added a page to do with the new video of stills of Eric, the magazine components has a new page and also added some info to try and assist folks wanting to post pics here.  If anyone has anything to add re those suggestions, do let me know.

>>Regarding R9 lubrications...  This is an issue I spent a lot of time and energy going over with Karl and Eric during and after my visit with them.  Bottom line is that the amounts of grease you see being distributed on the R9 in the pics are right on = just what they do at the factory.  The rails in particular seem to benefit from "lots" of grease.

Although other lubes may work in the R9, I feel it is best to stick with the factory suggested products - especially when advising folks on what to use...this in particular when talking to a novice like me with limited experience testing lubes in guns.  Karl told me the #1 problem he sees in guns returned to the factory is lack of proper lubricant.  I think this is especially true regarding grease on the rails.

Rohrbaugh recommends using "Super Lube with PTFE".  Bear in mind there are several different grades of Super Lube - so be sure to purchase the one with PTFE.  You can purchase this product on line at WWW.Super-Lube.com

The oil used at the Factory is Mobile One 0-30.  This is a light grade of oil which can be purchased at some car places...although I was unable to find it here in my area.  Eric told me that most quality, light grade gun oils will probably suffice...again - the specific grease being more important than the oil.

Lastly as an FYI...  The Loctite used on the grip screws is 222 Loctite.

To sum up...I would encourage using goodly amounts (probably more than used on most other guns) of the proper grease and oil on the R9 for routine maintenance, just as shown on the pics showing Eric doing the deed.  Anything less and you may risk problems with the gun (FTFeed, FTEject, etc.), and you may even void the warranty.

I too would like to thank Chris for his OUTSTANDING work making those pics usable/useful, in addition to that SUPERB narration job, resulting in another of his professional grade video clips which should prove helpful to any and all R9 owners.

It's efforts and people like this involved with all things R9 which help set the "Pup" a notch apart from other guns and projects.  You may first experience such excellence if ever you have reason to interact with any and all the folks at the Rohrbaugh Factory.  It therefore does not surprise me to see this excellence passed on in folks like Duane, who provide this Forum format for us at no cost, and Chris who so willingly (and freely) makes available his talent, skills, and service to help folks like us better to know and love our R9s.

By gosh - it makes me proud to be an R9 owner - lol...!  Funny, but true.

I wish all the folks here on this Forum a Wonderful Christmas weekend, and all the best in the New Year...!!

Lube well & shoot well...!!...TW<<

Thx TW - well, point taken re the lube quantities - tho as I think I may have said on my FAQ (personal comments) - I might still tend to be a shade less generous - and I mean only slight - even if it means more frequent takedowns, clean and lube again.

It is only because of what I have experienced with having a huge lot of grease on rails - plus of course and inevitably I'd think - after reassembly there is bound to be excess at rail ends etc which will need wiped off.

Not disputing the Bros R - just my own take.  Plus, if an R9 went back to factory - there sure as heck would not find it looking too dry! ;D

Know what Dave (and thank you) - as much as anything, it is the excellent company I enjoy that motivates me to do this stuff.  Plus I do have the luxury of quite a bit of time - something not all folks have when hugely busy all day.

If I pop off tomorrow at least I have left something of a legacy! LOL!  ;D

Bill - re the 25Mb file.

Well I have decided to process the .avi and generate a big 25Mb (in fact nearer 26Mb depending how you count your bytes!!).

This one comes out at 384x288 and so it necessarily expands the images a bit.  Not really sure whether any great advantage, compared with the 8Mb version and player expanded a bit.  You'll have to do a compare and decide for yourself.

Anyways - it is uploading as I write (12.20am EST Saturday 24th) and upload to this server seems a tad slow tonight.  Once there and I expect by time you catch this it will be there - (anyone else allow some time buffer to let this biggie get on server!) - go grab it and you can see.

If I could upload the 1.4Gb AVI then you could have the original LOL!

Gotta say - at 3.5 Mb or so per second, AVI sure is thirsty for disk space!

Merry Christmas everybody!!

Is there a downloadable file somewhere of TW's video pictures as a sequence of printed pictures in jpeg or something similar, with the comentary printed by each picture.  Maybe there is some way to make the video print out the sequence of pictures to hard copy.  I am just not familiar that much with video.  Anyway, the printed commentary would be missing.

I would like to make a notebook of the sequence of pictures and the oral discussion for benchtop reference, if that is at all possible.  I don't have speakers on my computer -- I hate for machines to nag me!  So I can just watch the pictures move by.  They are excellent and pretty understandable without the verbal commentary -- but annotated pictures would really be neat!

I sure appreciate all your work in getting these pictures available to us.

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year,
Leon

Chris:

As my pain meds permit, I'm still catching up on my reading of the Forum's postings during the past week and just reviewed your latest videos.  They are superb!  Thanks to TW and Eric for making the photographs available and to you for your extraordinary work and skill in converting them into video format.

Also, Merry Christmas to you up there in the "frozen northland" of Pennsylvania from us down here in the "balmy climes" of East Tennessee.   ;)

Chris,

Here is an error message when accessing the file.

The requested URL /vid-download/r9-eric-pics-02-25mb.wmv was not found on this server.

I'll keep trying the link later.

Thank you for making the large file available.  I want to get every bit of "goodness" possible.

It's a mighty fine Christmas present for all the forum members and visitors.

Bill - Hmmmm - well checked to make sure upload had completed and file is there on server but yeah - went to download myself and it ain't comin' thru!  Grrrr!

I'll check it out and see what's wrong - can't find any syntax error either in URL.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Correction Bill, just checked - I was doing that so late I overlooked the file name being slightly different from my link - have amended filename on server so should work now!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Leon - you raise a valid point re a stills sequence.  What I might do then when time permits - is, still using small pics - add space uner each one and add text onto that - so there would be then a set of IIRC about 50 pics.  If these then compressed and bundled into a ZIP file - would that do?  They can then be seen in sequence by filename or some pic numbering

A zip file which unzips to a folder full of jpeg or tif pictures would work beautifully to produce an annotated photo gallery hard copy of TW's pictures.  Photoshop has a nice utility that does just that for a folder full of raster graphics files.  I would be happy to run it and make the gallery available to the forum viewers in a single file in PDF format.

Best Wishes,
Leon

Leon - now there's a thought - a PDF!  I had thought of PowerPoint at one stage but not all folks have it.

If I put this together in my DTP and convert to PDF then we'll be there in one hit.  Good thinking.

Let me work on that when I can - and if it works out then I'll place the file for folks to download.  I will probably use the small pics again as they are all tweaked and ready to go - I think they'll be big enough.

BTW folks - had a call from Eric a bit earlier on - he had happened to drop by and read a few things and - had seen the video!!!!  Fortunately - he liked it!!!! (Phew!) :)

We had a good chat and I am getting itchy waiting on some feedback on numerous things once the Shot Show is over - I think there will be several things of great interest (I know so!).

May I tho from Eric - pass on his sincere best wishes to us all here for the holidays, he did want me to do that.  We of course return said greetings.

>>Chris...

Great job with the PDF file...!  Between that, your original video, and the vid you did narrating my pics - there is absolutely NO excuse for anyone to be confused with maintaining the R9...!!  I would like to nominate you for an Academy Award-type thing.  Any seconds to that...?

One thing though...although I was able to open and read the PDF...I had some sort of problem with the download to my computer.  Actually, the download went of - but when I went to open it from there I got some sort of error message saying "file does not begin with '%PDF-'"  I have no idea what that means...that saying I should...or shouldNOT begin said file with that thing...?  You can see why I struggled so long just saving the pics on something I could send to you - eh...?  I admit it...I am computer challenged.  Again though - thanks...!...TW<<
