Title: Do you "show and tell" your Rohrbaugh?
Post by: Erich on August 19, 2005, 04:40:30 PM
I ask this after having lunch with a couple of male judges and three women lawyers (one of whom was my wife). Since the girls had commented on Gina's new ring (my anniversary present to her), she said, "Tell them what you got!"

Well, my anniversary present was my R9s. Neither of the gents had ever heard of it (and one is a pretty serious gun guy), so when we were done with lunch, we moseyed over to my car and had a gander.

They were both pretty blown away by the size, weight, engineering, and quality of construction. At lunch I'd told them that it was a 9mm the size of some .25s, but they were nevertheless pretty blown away when they handled it. One of them (the gun guy) is going to go try it out with me soon. And both of the gents expressed some interest in getting their own.

So, while I know it's a deep cover gun that's intended to be kept quiet until needed, does anyone else feel the need to show their Rohrbaugh to friends (in appropriate settings, of course) because . . . well, you just can't believe how cool it is?  8)

Erich, In my business I do it all the time. However, never with my carry gun!   Tom

I usually call my self an unpaid salesperson for products that I really like, and I know other people I know should have.
I have no problem showing off the efforts of guys like the "R" factory, or a Seecamp, and Surefire flashlights. It is a great honor when my friends buy something that they feel is good enough for me. They regard my opinion.

Just today, I had to show a good friend of mine, and co-worker, the R9. He couldn't wait to see it, and examine how well  made it is, and the smoothness. He loved it!
The funny thing is, his brand new R9 is sitting at the very dealer where I got mine. Yep, he was part of my group that ordered a R9. The poor guy works day and night ( has for years ), and just doesn't have the time to go pick up his R9!

I like to share my R9 with shooting folks who are interested.  Most who see it are amazed - even more so when they shoot it, despite sometimes complaining a bit about their hand!!

As most here know and Eric and Karl too - I am a fairly active promoter of the lil' pup - even tho at times I have acknowledged as honestly as I can the odd small probs that have cropped up.

On balance therefore, I am a happy ambassador for this gun - usually telling folks to come here and read up on all the comments to get a fair and broad picture.

Got my R9 yesterday.  Shot it at a friend's range today.  It is now at the top of his want list!

I rarely "show and tell" with  my Rohrbaugh -- or any other weapon which I carry concealed.  If I do so, it is only for people who have my complete trust.  I may be paranoid, but so be it.

Capt - welcome from me too :)

Richard - same here really - I ''share'' my carry with some folks at the club and - apart from that I guess, wife, step kids, and my own kids.

Few others at all, except very close friends.

The NRA courses I teach on are, on reflection, one other situation - where I am always proud to show the R9! :)

I learned about gun safety from my dad when I was a little kid.  One of his rules was to never tell school classmates about the guns in the house nor to ever "show and tell" the guns when kids came over to play.  His point was that it's not safe for the whole world to know what valuables you have locked away in the house, especially guns (stolen guns are easy currency in the bad guy business)  My buddies that I go shooting with all know about the guns, but to talk about guns with random friends at lunch doesn't seem wise.  You can trust your friends not to steal from you, but you don't know whom they are going to tell (your friend says to one of his after work hoops buddies "you should see the cool $1000 gun Erich has, he showed it to me at lunch today, he keeps it in his car")  My basic point is that you have to be careful to whom you "show and tell"

I'm always happy to "show and tell", but only when I am home, and pretend to go into another room to dig out the pistol.

I don't think it's a good idea for anyone to know you are carrying a firearm.  Most likely you would be first to be shot in the head if something bad happened.

An exception is when visiting a friend who is a known license holder.  We both know about each other.

Bwhahaha - now that is different Hahaha!

Some very good friends were over recently and we were all in the office - I opened the safe to show Alan some stuff and wife says - " my, but you have a lotta stuff in there''.

I countered that by adding the usual disclaimer - ''but Hon - stuff in the back was never obvious - just cos it's now in the front - you can see it'' LOL!

She's no fool tho - and knows we have some of our retirement wrapped up in there ! ;D

I sorta tell my wife about purchases.

For example, if the gun cost $199, I say it was one hundred something.

When I trade two guns for one which is much better, I make sure she knows I got rid of some guns.   :)

My wife knows I have guns.  That is where her interest in the subject ends.  So why would I tell her I just bought a $1000 gun?

I told my wife the Rohrbaugh was widely considered to be heirloom quality.

She is intensely interested in acquiring antiques, so we both danced wildly through the house.

A very good point..

Why would any sane person go any further than that? :D

It might go like this, "Hello sweet Wife, even though you have enabled me to buy all the guns I want by your lack of interest, but could you at least comment on the apparent lack of  restraint on my part, as to gun purchases ? :-/

Letting your wife know what's in your gun safe can be costly.  A couple of years ago, I was repeatedly urging my little wife to start carrying something larger than her NAA MiniMag and telling her that I would get her any pistol or revolver she wanted.  One day she announced that she had made her decision.  I was overjoyed, until I learned what decision she had made.  It turned out that she had found her weapon of choice while rummaging through my gun safe.  It was the weapon I called "my Dress Blue Sunday gun" -- a Seecamp .32 adorned with a pair of old ivory grips which cost almost as much as the pistol.

Needless to say, title passed on the spot.   :'(

This is an excellent viewpoint that I never considered. I think I will be a little more thoughtful when showing my friends stuff that I own
thanks

Erich,
I like to show off my R-9. But not while I'm carrying it concealed. I will show it off at the local target range. I will even let others shoot it --if they are friends that I know will handle it correctly, and won't be upset by the "brisk" recoil. I was carrying it one day while at my local gun dealer. They had never seen a Rohrbaugh (I got my R-9 at a gun show) so they said they would like to see mine. I said "OK, may I step in to your back room?" They said yes, so I stepped into the back room. Discreetly took out my R-9, took the magizine out and cleared the round from the chamber. I returned to the front of the store, showed them the chamber was empty and then let them "fondle" it. They were all quite impressed by my pup. Another way I show off my R-9 is with pictures of it I've taken of it with the camera in my Motarola V710 cell phone. It takes great pictures, and has a nice large color screen to show them on. Even though I can't take my pup to work with me I can take the pictures of it with me, to show to my fellow workers who are interested in guns.

When my wife asks, "...how many guns do you have?" I say "I don't know. How many Longaberger baskets do you have?" That usually ends the discussion. Although after she found out how much my R-9 cost I owe her quite a few Longaberger baskets.  ;)

While at the range shooting my R9 the other day a couple of shooters thought it was a NAA.  I was quick to point out it was not. They were impressed at the size of the pistol in 9mm.
